Vaccination coupled with simple preventive tools may help counter lethal Delta strain of Covid-19

Delta remains ‘most concerning’ Covid variant, WHO says
Delta remains ‘most concerning’ Covid variant, WHO says

By Rafia Haider

KARACHI, Sep 02 (APP): It was difficult for Mrs. Azra Rizvi to believe that she or her husband could be the reason for their eight year old son Arham’s Delta positivity, that too because they could not convince themselves of getting vaccinated against coronavirus.

Realizing that they did not ever care for use of masks, hand hygiene and social distance to help protect themselves as well as all those around, immunized or not but vulnerable to the viral infection with its varied strains was definitely all the more painful for her .

Rizvis are just a name for a sizable group of people still to realize severity and sensitivity of the situation enhancing their own risks and also those around them to Delta variant, the most infectious and dominant strain of Covid presently registered in most parts of the world including Pakistan, largely due to community spread.

In the given backdrop the efforts underway across the country to vaccinate no less than 70 percent of 119 million above 18 population against Covid -19 in next six months and expected phase wise coverage expansion to the lower age groups, including 17 years to 18 years from September one, is all the more appreciable as Delta with all its virulence and high transmissibility, is registered infecting more of the young adults.

The government efforts do sound ambitious yet strategies being adopted have definitely ignited hope that the transmission of Covid-19 and its variants could be contained, paving way for reduced chances of infection among people in general and those with low resistance (due to age) and / or compromised immunity mainly due to non-communicable diseases.

Need not to ignore that none of the available Covid – 19 vaccines offer 100 percent immunity against any of its variants and those inoculated can be found re-infected, concerned officials as well as doctors talking to APP repeatedly mentioned that no less than 80 percent of the coronavirus infected people reaching hospitals for want of urgent interventions had never received jabs of any of the vaccines against viral infection.

“A significant number of those tested Delta positive, with no coronavirus vaccine history, had to be put on ventilators or be placed on bed with oxygen facility at different dedicated healthcare facilities established under emergency conditions,” said Dr. Samreen Zaidi associated with Sindh Institute of Infectious Diseases.

Pakistan braving the fourth wave amidst a difficult situation where a single Delta carrier can infect even eight others that too at a much higher pace demands optimum vaccination of all eligible age groups as well as proper and across the board application of essential social tools to prevent chances of infection for which experts suggest a robust public health education program focused on community based prevention and protection strategies.

This is all the more relevant as Delta, more virulent and contagious than other strains of coronavirus, is a threat for many of the kids and young adults, however, the challenge faced even in the developed world is their being asymptomatic and reaching hospitals only after developing severity of the ailment. The countries thus reached a concerted decision to introduce vaccines, with tested efficacy for children above 12 years.

Fortunately in the local context children tested positive for the infection on the basis of their respective doctors’ suspicion (not comfortable with the symptoms common cold, congestion, fever)

a significant majority were successfully isolated at home and reported with safe recovery.
In a higher number of cases the condition was also found to be self limiting. However, in the absence of capacities to ensure that all corona cases are registered and follow-up is maintained, exact status can not be determined.

In most of the countries with proper systems in place and where situation had been real bad till recent past ,the children, along with adults, are not only being administered Covid-19 mRNA vaccine but this is also being strongly supplemented by mandatory use of masks and other relevant preventions leading towards successful containment of infection rate and resuming new normal lives that does include regular schooling.

“Children simply can not afford the risk and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their safety as we the adults owe a healthy future to our children, commented Dr. Sultan working for one of the major charitable hospitals.

Mentioning that coronavirus could be found even among the neonates, the oncologist mentioned that Delta variant has particularly affected pregnant ladies, apparently those who did not get themselves vaccinated due to lack of proper knowledge .

The two lady doctors, specialists in their respective fields of medicine regretted the fact being ignored was that Covid 19 was casting its much severe implications on behavioral and psychological health of children manifested in the form of screen addiction, lack of discipline, restlessness and even weight gain with its side effects on their entire personality.

ISLAMABAD, Sep 2 (APP): Prime Minister Imran Khan Thursday said that the industrialization as well as the promotion of tourism were inevitable to repay debts through boosting exports and wealth creation.

The prime minister, addressing the groundbreaking ceremony of Sambrial-Kharian Motorway here, said the motorway would facilitate the industrial triangle of Gujranwala-Wazirabad-Sialkot which was also a densely population region.

Minister for Communications Murad Saeed, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, SAPM Usman Dar and Chairman of National Highway Authority Captain (Retd) Khurram Agha attended the event.

The prime minister, who earlier unveiled the plaque to break ground for 69-kilometer motorway, said the area had immense potential for industrialization, so it was equally direly needed to incentivize the industrial sector to bring about a boom in exports and increase revenue.

He said the government was committed to facilitate the SMEs sector by easing their approval processes, and also assured the NHA to support them for swift approval of public private partnership projects.

The Rs 32 billion Sambrial-Kharian Motorway would beget around 4,275 jobs and cater to around 23,000 vehicles per day.

The initial four-lane motorway would consist of five interchanges at Jalalpur Jattan, Pero Shah, Daulat Nagar, Galyana and Kharian.

The prime minister said SMEs were the backbone of the national economy but unfortunately, they had to face impediments for their approval processes.

Regarding the construction of 69-km Sambrial-Kharian Motorway which would later be extended to Rawalpindi, would shorten Lahore-Islamabad distance by 100 kilometer comparing the existing M-2 Motorway.

He said additional 100 km stretch of M-2 Motorway was beyond consumption as it cost additional burden on economy in form of imported fuel besides maintenance cost of vehicles during last 20 years.

He said the public private partnership (PPP) mode would help save the development fund which would be spent on other public welfare projects.

The prime minister also appreciated the saving of Rs 12 billion (26% of project cost) through negotiation by the NHA.

He said every project must be designed in accordance with its benefits for the people.

Lauding PTI government’s project of Swat Motorway, the prime minister said owing to better connectivity, around 2.7 million vehicles had visited the area during Eid days.

He said the country could generate huge revenue through prudent policies like promotion of tourism considering country’s huge potential.

He said so far the country was looking at the domestic tourism but once the road between Swat and Gilgit was constructed, it would attract foreign tourists too thus bringing foreign exchange.

Imran Khan said the tourism could help fill the dollar gap until country’s exports reach to the desired level.

He appreciated the communications minister and NHA for executing numerous projects within record time, even more than those who used to beg votes claiming credit of mere roads construction.

Communications Minister Murad Saeed told the gathering it was the first motorway of North Punjab. After approval by the CDWP, the second phase would also be launched from Kharian to Rawalpindi this year.

Drawing a comparison between the PML-N and PTI government’s performance during first three years, the minister said the PTI had constructed 1753km roads comparing 645 km by the PML-N government.

He said the PTI planned 6118km road against just 858km by the PML-N. During the incumbent government, the NHA also increased its revenue by Rs87 billion, he added.

Murad Saeed said the NHA had completed 29 projects this year and was also set to launch repair of around 4,000km roads by June.

NHA Chairman Khurram Agha explaining the features of the projects said the NHA had saved Rs 12 billion by bargaining the project cost from initial Rs 43 billion to 32 billion. Later, the FWO, the contractor, also gave a voluntary concession of Rs1 billion, he added.

New York declares state of emergency as heavy rains wreak havoc

New York declares state of emergency as heavy rains wreak havoc

NEW YORK, Sep 02 (APP): A state of emergency has been declared in New York City after it was hit on Wednesday evening by record rainfall and flash flooding as a result of Tropical Storm Ida that brought to a grinding halt underground trains and turned streets in Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn into rivers.

Amid the downpour, the National Weather Service said on Twitter, “this particular warning for New York City is the second time we’ve ever issued a Flash Flood Emergency (It’s the first one for NYC.”

Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city was “enduring an historic weather event” with “brutal flooding” and “dangerous conditions” on the roads.

Television footage showed water pouring into underground train stations and people’s homes, and flooded roads.

Lightning that was part of a storm over queen where a transformer was hit, leading to a small fire. No outages or impacts on service were reported, however.

Hail was also fairly frequent throughout the region Thursday, with some towns reported golf ball-sized hail at one point, while some was reported in Hillsdale town that was as big as a tennis ball.

The neighbouring state of New Jersey also declared an emergency and reported at least two deaths.

A person drowned in Passaic, New Jersey, the local mayor said, A tornado also destroyed at least nine homes in Mullica Hill, in the same state.

The roof of a postal building collapsed in Kearny, New Jersey, with people inside at the time, police said. Rescue crews were on the scene, but it’s not clear how many injuries there might be.

The National Weather Service said it had recorded 3.15 inches of rain in New York’s Central Park in one hour.

New York police had urged people to stay off the roads and the fire department had said it was responding to calls from across the city.

The city’s underground train system had mostly closed, and many surface train services and flights out of New York and New Jersey were suspended.

The remnants of Hurricane Ida have been pushing north across the east of the country, having hit Louisiana as a Category 4 hurricane on Sunday.

Hundreds of thousands of homes in Louisiana remained without power and New Orleans was under a night-time curfew.

Many factors contributed to flooding, but a warming atmosphere caused by climate change made extreme rainfall more likely.

The world has already warmed by about 1.2C since the industrial era began and temperatures would keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the occupation authorities had put strict restrictions on the movement of the people and the whole area was cordoned off.

Although Syed Ali Gilani and his family wanted him to be buried at Martyrs Graveyard in Srinagar, but the Indian authorities did not allow it fearing agitation from people of occupied Kashmir. He was buried just few meters away from his house in Hyderpora, Srinagar.
A small number of people mainly some close relatives were allowed to participate in the funeral prayers and to have a last glimpse of the martyred leader.

Indian army had laid restrictions all across the occupied valley to prevent mammoth gathering on the funeral of Syed Ali Gilani.

Soon after the news of Syed Ali Gilani’s demise spread out, announcements were made from mosques around Srinagar calling out people to come out of their homes to pay homage to Syed Ali Gilani.

However, Indian authorities used coercive measures to dissuade people from coming out of their homes. Several Hurriyat leaders and activists including Mukhtar Ahmad Waza have been rounded up by the Indian authorities as well.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference has also fervently appealed to the people of Kashmir to come out of their homes and hold large protest against the cruelty of Modi regime. Speaking at the fourth Business Excellence Awards Ceremony of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), he said that Pakistan would immensely benefit from peace and stability in Afghanistan.

Gwadar port would be shortest route for the Central Asian states and trade of these countries would flourish, he added.

The regional stability would catapult Pakistan into a new era of progress as business opportunities would remarkably increase, he observed.

He said Pakistan endured terrorism and the burden of Afghan refugees during the four decades war of Afghanistan.

Pakistani leadership especially Prime Minister Imran Khan continued stressing on the world that the Afghan issue could only be settled through political means and use of force and war was not the way to resolve the conflict.

In the conflict, $ two trillion were spent and tens of thousands of lives were lost but the issue could not be resolved, he remarked.

In India, the government behaved crassly and its economy was devastated by the ravages of coronavirus, he continued.

Prime Minister Imran Khan made it clear that businesses could not be shut down during the pandemic because it would have created immense financial difficulties, he added.

He said brand Pakistan should be promoted and businessmen could do this as they were hard working, sincere and honest.

The President said the government would continue to facilitate the business community, adding nation could only move ahead if it keeps its moral values intact.

The businessmen should take benefit from the loan schemes offered by the banks. Especially women should be encouraged and entities like Islamabad Chamber of Commerce should set up a desk to help women and differently abled persons in getting loans from the banks, he added.

The President said the government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan launched the Ehsaas programme to take care of the basic needs of the vulnerable sections of society.

He said women should be given right to inheritance, adding the representatives of chambers of commerce should mentor women in becoming successful entrepreneurs.

Taliban set to name Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada as Afghanistan’ supreme leader: NYT

NEW YORK, Sep 01 (APP): The Taliban are close to forming their government, naming Sheikh Haibatullah Akhundzada, as the country’s supreme authority, The New York Times reported Wednesday, citing a Taliban official.

The announcement, which will also lay out key appointments to the communications and interior ministries, may come as soon as Thursday, the Times said, citing the official who requested anonymity.

According to interviews with Taliban and other sources in Kabul and Kandahar, the newspaper said that Sheikh Haibatullah would be the supreme authority of the new Islamic government, with a theocratic role similar to that of the Iran’s supreme leader.

Sheikh Haibatullah has been meeting with other leadership figures in Kandahar this week.

Bloomberg News, citing Bilal Karimi, a member of the Taliban’s cultural commission, also reported on the plans for the new government, including Sheikh Haibatullah’s new role.

Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, a co-founder of the Taliban who has served as the group’s deputy leader in recent years, was expected to be in charge of day-to-day affairs as head of government, it said.

Baradar acted as the chief negotiator for the group in peace talks with the United States in Qatar, presiding over the agreement that cleared the way for the American withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Other key positions in the government, according to the Times, are expected to go to Sirajuddin Haqqani, another deputy and an influential operations leader within the movement, and Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob, who is the son of the Taliban movement’s founder, Mullah Muhammad Omar.

Still unclear was the role of a leadership shura or council, and whether its membership would fulfill the Taliban’s promise of building an inclusive government, the paper said. The question also remains of whether leaders from previous governments, such as Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, who have remained in Kabul for talks, will be included.

Other Taliban leaders expected to receive cabinet posts included Sadar Ibrahim, who has functioned as de facto interior minister since the Taliban’s takeover, the Times said.

At the same time, the paper said the new government will face huge challenges, including growing humanitarian and economic crises.

It will also be strapped for cash as funds are cut off by the United States and international lenders, as foreign governments debate whether to recognize the Taliban, the report said.

Basic services like electricity are under threat and Afghans have been struggling with a surge in food prices and malnutrition, it was pointed out.
