The Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) has come a long way since its inception, from being a text-only news service to its gradual transformation into a modern news service provider.

Serving the nation since 1947 by providing an accurate, objective, uninterrupted flow of news to the people, the national news service is pursuing a comprehensive strategy to transform the existing news operations into a forward-looking service – APP Digital for its diverse subscriber-base and the public.

The APP Digital News strives to serve as a rich online source of information for latest news, reports, analytic write-ups on Pakistan, and events and issues of regional and international importance. All APP services are being made available on a range of digital platforms

Adhering to the guiding principles, as per its Charter, the Associated Press of Pakistan, aims at providing authentic news content through its multiple platforms within the shortest possible time, to the widest possible audience. The regular APP news service provides content in English and Urdu. It also has translation services in ChineseArabicSindhiSiraikiPashtoBalochi, and Brahvi languages. APP releases its news, photos and videos to subscribers through FTP; and these include national and international news dailies, news channels, foreign wire services and business houses. Its web portal and social media platforms, provide select news for the masses. With headquarters in Islamabad, APP has nine bureaus and seven stations. It has Foreign Correspondents in Washington, London, New Delhi and Beijing, besides a Stringer at the United Nations – New York.

APP has around 400 editorial staff including around 100 Correspondents at the District and Tehsil levels. On average, the APP releases 30,000 stories per month in English and Urdu, 4500 in regional languages, and around 2000 photographs and video clips.

Muhammad Asim Khichi

Managing Director, Associated Press of Pakistan (APP)

Muhammad Asim Khichi, a senior civil servant belonging to the Information Group (BS-20), is presently serving as the Managing Director of the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) — the country’s premier national news agency. He assumed the charge of this office on March 9, 2023.

Mr. Khichi brings with him a rich and diverse professional experience spanning over 23 years in public service, during which he has held a range of important positions across various federal organizations and government institutions.

Throughout his career, Mr. Khichi has demonstrated leadership and administrative acumen in managing strategic public relations, media affairs, and institutional operations. His notable assignments include serving as the Public Relations Officer (PRO) at the Prime Minister’s Office, where he handled high-level media coordination and public affairs at the highest executive tier of government.

He has also rendered services at the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) and the Capital Development Authority (CDA), contributing to policy implementation, regulatory oversight, and public outreach initiatives. Mr. Khichi has had the distinction of serving as the Director General of Radio Pakistan, where he led one of the country’s most important public broadcasting institutions.

In addition, he has served as the Principal Information Officer (PIO) — a critical role overseeing the government’s media management and information dissemination strategy — along with various senior positions in the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. His broad portfolio has involved responsibilities ranging from media relations, content regulation, institutional capacity building, to promoting Pakistan’s national narrative both domestically and internationally.

As the head of APPC, Mr. Khichi is dedicated to modernizing the Corporation’s operations, upholding the highest standards of journalistic integrity, and strengthening the agency’s role as a credible, impartial, and effective source of news and information for audiences in Pakistan and beyond. A firm believer in transparency, merit, and ethical governance, he is also a harbinger of fighting corruption within the Corporation, ensuring accountability and institutional integrity in all affairs of the organization.

His leadership reflects an unwavering commitment to public service, institutional reforms, and the responsible stewardship of Pakistan’s national news infrastructure.
