ISLAMABAD, Jun 23 (APP): Chairman of the Press Council of Pakistan (PCP), Arshad Khan Jadoon said on Monday that all pending cases have been resolved in a short span of time.
During a visit to the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP) office at Parliament House, he said, “Soon after taking charge in February 2024, I resolved all 175 long-pending cases with the PCP.”
He added that the Council had also taken suo motu notice of around 100 fake news cases. About half of those cases have already been addressed, while the rest will be resolved soon.
The chairman said the PCP is actively working to protect press freedom, support working journalists, and combat the spread of fake news. He said the Council has now become a credible institution in the fight against disinformation.
He said that the PCP, formed under a 2002 ordinance, is a key body for media accountability. After assuming office, he took steps to make the organization fully functional. “We have introduced a media ethics law so that those spreading fake news can face legal action,” he added.
Arahad Khan Jadoon said that the PCP is operational not only in Islamabad, but also in all four provinces, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
To raise public awareness, he said, the Council had organized seminars in various universities to educate people about media laws and the risks of misinformation.
He also mentioned close coordination with leading journalist organizations, including the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) and the All Pakistan Newspapers Society (APNS), to take action against false reporting.
The chairman shared that he had visited press clubs across the country to inform the journalist community about the Council’s role and achievements. He also spoke about his international engagements and mentioned the inauguration of a TV channel during a visit to France.
He said that 30 fresh graduates from the various universities had been invited to attend a training course, where some of the country’s top journalists briefed them. At the end of the course, all participants were awarded certificates.
