Speaking on the occasion, Aurat Foundation Chairperson Dr Masooma Hassan said 30 percent population in the country was living below the poverty line because of illiteracy, growing social issues and lack of awareness about rights, particularly by women.
She said children’s education was must for the social development
of the people, particularly women. The Aurat Foundation with the
financial support of foreign donor agencies was collaborating with the
BISP in its Prime Minister’s Waseela-e-Taleem Programme so that
children could be able to get primary level education without any difficulty, she added.
She said social awareness among women was a part of the
Wasela-e-Taleem Programme. For the purpose, committees comprising
women had been formed at the grassroots level so that the children
of 5 to 12 years age could get enrolled in schools and monthly stipend
of Rs 250 each for their education.
At present 50,000 committees had been formed to target some 1.3
million children under the programme, she added.
The programme, she said, was initially launched in five districts
and would later be expanded to 27 other districts.
BISP Secretary Saleem Ranjha also addressed the ceremony.
BISP beneficiary women including Sabz Ali Brohi from Union Council
Jangshahi, Gul Bano from Union Council Nimali and Nasima of Union
Council Sondo also shared their views with the participants of the
ceremony and thanked the government for providing financial assistance
to them for improving the living standard of their family members.
On the occasion, a street theatre was also presented highlighting
the social issues.
