Govt focusing on agriculture sector: Bosan

MULTAN, Oct 9 (APP): Federal Minister for National Food Security and  Research Sikandar Hayat Bosan on Sunday said the government was paying an immense focus on progress of the agriculture sector.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was taking personal interest for  promotion of the agri sector, he said this while addressing a laptops distribution ceremony at the Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture at Central Cotton Research Institute here.

The minister said the agriculture sector had been ignored in the past  and now the incumbent government was striving hard for its development besides utilising all-out resources to improve it.

“We are trying to reduce cost of production in order to compete the world,” he said.

“Prices of various agricultural commodities will face a downward trend  or remain at the same point for the next four to 10 years at the international level according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), therefore, we have to prepare ourselves for this situation in future, ” he said.

The minister said the government was trying to reduce or abolish all  sorts of taxes on the sector. Similarly, without subsidy, the agriculture sector could not be raised anywhere in the world and the government was extending handsome subsidy in this field.

“Although we have surplus different crops, including wheat, maize and  rice, while the country has six million tonnes surplus stock of wheat and our rice production is 7 million tonnes as local consumption is only 2.8 million tonnes yet it was a challenge for us how to export these commodities and provide a handsome return to our farmers,” he said.

About the Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture, the minister  said he had meetings with ambassador of Korea for grant of 10 million dollars for the varsity.

The minister assured of his support to the university administration to  resolve its problems.

He urged students to spend their time in field also for better
experience as they could play a vital role for improving the country’s economy.

On this occasion, VC MNSUA Rao Asif, DCO Nadir Chathha, teachers and a  large number of students were also present.
