SHARM EL SHEIKH, Egypt, July 15 (APP): President of Serbia Boris Tadic Wednesday called on Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani and discussed the ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries. In a meeting held on the sidelines of 15th summit of Non-Aligned Movement here, the two leaders agreed to develop and promote activities for enhancing people-to-people and cultural contacts between Pakistan and Serbia.

Prime Minister Gilani said the two countries enjoy warm and cordial relations, and keeping in view the tradition of friendly relations, Pakistan wishes to further strengthen their diplomatic ties.

He said Pakistan terms Serbia a very important country and considers it as a factor of stability in the Balkan region.

He said Pakistan highly values its mutually beneficial cooperation with Serbia and hopes to further strengthen and broaden political, economic and trade ties between the two countries.

Gilani welcomed the bilateral political consultations between the two countries proposed for the end of July in Islamabad.

He regretted that there had been no high-level contacts between the leaders of the two countries for past many years, which he said needed to be revived.

The Prime Minister said appointment of Pakistan’s resident Ambassador to Serbia was a manifestation of the country’s interest to further strengthen and deepen the bilateral relations, after Pakistan reopened its Embassy some eight years back.

He said total trade volume between the two countries was much below their potential, and stressed the need for efforts to be made to increase bilateral trade.

Gilani also called for cooperating in defence, defence production and exploring training fields between the two countries.

He said Pakistan and Serbia (the then Yugoslavia) had signed various bilateral agreements, which should be revalidated.

Serbian President Tadic said his country was wishful of further collaborating with Pakistan in diverse areas, and hoped that it would strengthen the mutual relationship between the two countries.
