ISLAMABAD, Sep 25 (APP):Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar on Tuesday assured a foolproof’ security to former president General (retd) Pervez Musharraf if he returned to Pakistan.
The CJP gave the assurance while hearing a plea in connection with the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) issued by Musharraf in 2007.
The case pertains to the recovery of a large amount of public money allegedly wasted by former presidents Musharraf and Asif Zardari Zardari, and former attorney general Malik Qayyum in the wake of issuance of the NRO.
During the course of hearing, Musharraf’s lawyer presented details of the assets of his client in Pakistan and abroad.
The lawyer informed the bench that Musharraf owned nothing in the country while he had a flat worth 5.4 million dirhams in Dubai. A farmhouse in Chak Shahzad, worth Rs 43.6m, had been leased to his wife, he added.
He stated that a 2015 model Mercedes car worth AED 230,000, 2017 model Tahoe jeep worth AED150,000, and 2018 model Impala car worth AED130,000 were also owned by Musharraf, while he had a bank account at the Union National Bank, Dubai, with a balance of AED 92,100 and another one in the United Bank at London with a balance of 21,550 pounds as well as shares of Dana Gas worth AED 268,653, he added.
The CJP remarked that Musharraf had left the country on the pretext of having back pain, but he was seen dancing in videos during his stay abroad.
He observed that If Musharraf were acquitted by the court in the treason case, he would at liberty to live anywhere in the world. His property would be unfreezed and no question would be asked as to how he had acquired the assets, he added.
The court then directed the Director General Rangers to ensure the former military ruler’s security and also ordered to de-seal his Chak Shahzad farmhouse upon his arrival. The court also inquired about his travel details.
The case was adjourned for a week.
