National baseball championship begins

LAHORE, May 31 (APP): The 13th edition of the national women baseball championship will be played here from tomorrow, Wednesday with eight teams taking part.

This was stated by President, Federation baseball Pakistan, Syed Khawar Shah at a press conference on Tuesday.

He said the event will serve as trials to select players for holding a camp to prepare the team for taking part in the baseball World Cup being played from September 1-11 in South Korea.

“We will be selecting as many as 25 players from the event to start our camp in the second week of July”, he said.
He informed that the international baseball federation has agreed to send two female coaches to Pakistan for the grooming and training of the Pakistani team.

“It will be an ideal opportunity for our female players to get latest training from foreign coaches to lift the level of their game to and to perform to a higher level in the World Cup” said Khawar Shah.

He said the participating teams of the women championship include, Pakistan Amry, HEC, Punjab, Islamabad, Balochistan, Sindh, KPK and FATa.

Lt Gen (retd) Syed Arif Hasan, President, Pakistan Olympic Association will inaugurate the event while Director General, Sports Board Punjab, Usman Anwar will be the chief guest the closing ceremony on June 5.

Khawar Shah said Pakistan will take part in the men world cup being played from September 22-25 in USA.

“We will be sending our team abroad for training prior to its participation in the World Cup and we will also be hiring the services of a foreign coach to impart training to our players at a camp here”, he said.

Khawar Shah also expressed his gratitude to DG SBP, Usman Anwar for extending top level facilities for the holding of baseball events and training camps etc.

“Sports Board Punjab also provided every kind of assistance during our Asia Baseball Cup 2015 training camp organised under the supervision of Japanese baseball coach Toma Irokawa at Punjab Stadium,” he maintained.

He heaped praise on DG SPB for reviving sports culture across the country.

He lauded the services of DG SBP Usman Anwar for holding dozens of national and international sports events in Pakistan.

“During the last four years, he also extended every kind of assistance to other provinces for the growth of sports culture in the country,” he added.
