Ex Prime Minister Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi passes away
LONDON, Nov 21 (APP) The mortal remains of former Pakistani caretaker Prime Minister Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi who passed away here on Friday evening will be flown home on Sunday and will be laid to rest in his ancestral town of Naushero Feroze, District Nawab Shah. Jatoi, 78, remained in a Central London hospital since the beginning of the current month following a stroke. He was last seen in public at a gala dinner hosted by UK Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry on October 31.
Originally, a member of the
Pakistan People’s Party, he then went on to form a National People’s
Party after developing differences with his mother party. He was the
13th Prime Minister and served in a caretaker role for three months
from August 6, 1990 till November 6. He joined the newly established
Pakistan People’s Party in 1969 and was elected as MNA in 1970. Jatoi
was appointed Chief Minister of Sindh in 1973 and held the office till
1977 when late military ruler General Ziaul Haq toppled PPP Government.
Jatoi was a long time resident of London and lived in upscale locality of Marble Arch, near the famous Hyde Park.
Born on August 14, 1931,Jatoi was educated at Karachi Grammar School
and passed his senior Cambridge. In 1952, he went to England for his
bar at law, but had to return home within one year due to his father’s
serious illness.
Jatoi was elected to the first Provincial Assembly of West Pakistan in
1958, and was re elected in 1965. He has also served as Chairman
District Board of Nawabshah District in 1952, holding the distinction
of being the youngest District Board Chairman on the sub continent.
As a member of PPP Government under late Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, he held
various Ministerial posts. He was twice arrested for his association
with the Movement for Restoration of Democracy (MRD) He was the Founder
President of Islami Jamhoori Ittehad (IJI) formed in 1988. In 1989, he
was elected to the National Assembly in by elections from Kot Addu.
Jatoi was subsequently elected leader of the combined opposition
parties in the National Assembly in 1989.
Jatoi was appointed interim Prime Minister after the dismissal of the
Benazir government by the then President Ghulam Ishaq Khan. The NPP
contested the 1993 elections and later joined the Benazir Bhutto
government as a coalition partner till the GovernmentÆs dismissal in
1996 by President Farooq Leghari.
He fathered six sons and three daughters. One of his sons Tariq Jatoi
has pre deceased him. Of his other sons Ghulam Murtaza is a MNA, Arif
Mustafa and Masroor Mustafa are members of Sindh Assembly while Asif
Mustafa is a Senator. On learning the death of Ghulam Mustafa Jatoi,
Pakistan High Commissioner to UK Wajid Shamsul Hasan visited the
hospital and offered deepest condolences with his family members.
Condolences were also offered by British parliamentarian Lord Nazir
Ahmed while Chairman, Tehreek e Insaf Imran Khan said the nation has
lost an experienced politician and a keen supporter of democracy.
