MULTAN, Jan 16 (APP):The stage is set at Multan Cricket Stadium as Pakistan and the West Indies prepare for the first Test of a two-match series, starting on Friday. This series holds significant meaning: it marks the West Indies’ first Test series on Pakistani soil since 2006 and serves as the final series for both teams in the ongoing ICC World Test Championship cycle.
At a pre-match press conference on Thursday at Multan Cricket Stadium, Pakistan’s captain Shan Masood expressed his determination to end the current ICC World Test Championship cycle on a high note. He emphasized that Test cricket is not just about talent, but about adapting to challenges. “We are focused on finishing strong, and the team is prepared to fight hard,” Masood said. “Every Test match carries immense importance, and we are determined to give our best to win the series.”
Masood acknowledged the West Indies as a talented team, known for their unique style of play. “We expect them to be tough competitors,” he added. Despite this, he remained confident in his own team, highlighting the momentum gained from Pakistan’s recent series win against England at home. “That victory gave us significant belief and confidence, and we aim to carry that forward,” Masood said. “The entire team is committed to delivering strong performances and building a winning mindset for the future.”
On the other hand, West Indies captain Craig Brathwaite, who is leading his team in Pakistan for the first time, remained optimistic about the challenges ahead. He acknowledged Pakistan’s strength but emphasized his team’s preparedness and the importance of playing as a cohesive unit. “We are ready to take on the challenges and are confident in our ability to compete,” Brathwaite stated.
“We are very excited to be here in Pakistan, for most of us including myself, this was the first visit to the country and it was a fantastic opportunity to play against a strong team like Pakistan in their conditions. We understand that Pakistan was a dominant side at home but we have prepared well for the challenges ahead”, he said was holding a pre-match press conference at Multan Cricket Stadium after training session.
He maintained that the main focus of the team was on putting runs on board and taking 20 wickets, which was key to winning any test match. The practice game in Islamabad and our sessions here in Multan have been helpful and he himself was pleased with how the team was coming together. He said that it would be a test of character and resilience but the team was ready to give their best and complete hard in the series.
The West Indies have arrived with a mix of experience and young talent, aiming to improve on their recent Test record while Pakistan, on the other hand, boasts a balanced squad with three uncapped players including right-arm pacer Kashif Ali, batter Muhammad Huraira and wicketkeeper Rohail Nazir, poised for potential debuts.
However, the spinners Abrar Ahmed and Sajid Khan, returning to the squad, were also on the verge of career milestones, needing 11 and 6 wickets, respectively, to reach 50 Test dismissals.
Preparations for the series have been intense as Pakistan’s squad engaged in a three-day training camp in Multan, fine-tuning their strategies and acclimatizing to the conditions. Meanwhile, West Indies had an early start to their campaign, playing a three-day warm-up match against Pakistan Shaheens in Islamabad, followed by focused practice sessions in Multan.
The Multan crowd can expect an exciting contest, as both teams were determined to make their mark. For Pakistan, the objective was to maintain their winning streak at home and finish the championship on a high. For West Indies, it was an opportunity to rediscover their form and test themselves against one of the strongest home teams in world cricket.
