Work on Kurram Tangi dam in FATA next month: Governor told

PESHAWAR, May 3 (APP): The construction work on multi-purpose Kurram Tangi dam project on the Kurram River in Bannu and North Waziristan Agency will start from next month, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Iqbal Zafar Jhagra was informed in a meeting held here on Tuesday.

The meeting was arranged by FATA Secretariat to brief the government on foreign funded projects in FATA. Additional Chief Secretary FATA Muhammad Aslam Kamboh, Director General Project FATA, Deputy Director, Coordinator FISP, Chief of Party USAID Muhammad Fahim, Project Director, Program Manager and other high officials attended the meeting.

It was informed that all preparation to execute construction work on
Kurram Tani dam have been finalized and the work would start in next month. The project will provide water for agriculture, generate low-cost hydroelectric power and create employment for local residents.

CPEC to connect SAARC with Central Asian Region: Dar

ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP): Minister for Finance, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar on Tuesday said that the development of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) would play an important role in connecting SAARC with Central Asian Region.

He was addressing the 10th informal meeting of SAARC Finance Ministers on the sidelines of the Asian Development Bank’s annual board of governors meeting in Frankfurt, Germany.

He suggested that various new financial cooperation modes like economic and infrastructure projects through South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Development Fund needed to be initiated, in collaboration with other development partners to establish an economic corridor connecting the South Asian economies.

EU envoys to visit Pak universities to celebrate Europe Day

ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP): The EU Ambassadors in Pakistan in a unique way to celebrate the upcoming Europe Day that falls on May 9 will visit universities across Pakistan.

Ambassadors and diplomats from EU Member States will inform the students and faculty about the European Union, its bilateral relations with Pakistan as well as the country they are representing, a press release issued here Tuesday said.

They will lecture at public as well as private universities in different cities including Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Faisalabad, Peshawar and Charsadda. Haripur, Rawalakot and Quetta are also the expected venues.

ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP): Finance Minister, Senator Muhammad Ishaq Dar Tuesday emphasized that Europe and Asia must review their existing arrangements and open up markets by cutting down on tariff and non tariff barriers.

According to a statement issued by Finance Ministry the minister
highlighted the importance of open market strategy while participating
in a seminar on “Asia Europe Economic Cooperation: Fostering Greater
Trade and Investment.”

On infrastructure financing, Dar said, the multilateral
development banks must come up with new instruments including bonds to bridge the gaps.

Economic growth expected to exceed 5 percent during current year: Dar

ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP): Federal Minister for Finance Ishaq Dar has
said that economic growth of Pakistan for the ongoing year is expected to rise over 5 percent.

Giving an interview to a foreign organisation in Frankfurt, Germany, Ishaq Dar stated that present government made some bold decisions in June 2014 regarding the war against terrorism and many achievements have been made as a result of military operations in the country.

He said that almost $2.3 billion are expected to be spent on the ongoing operation against the militants.

Pakistan can acquire F-16s from other countries, if funding not available: Sartaj

ISLAMABAD, May 03 (APP): Adviser to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz Tuesday said Pakistan would acquire F-16 aircraft from other countries if funds were not made available from the United States.

Talking to the media after inaugurating a seminar on “Pakistan’s non-proliferation efforts and Strategic Export Control System”, the Adviser said Pakistan wanted the F-16 fighter jets from the US to help its counter-terrorism efforts.

“Pakistan will buy F-16s from some other country if funding [from the US] is not arranged,” he said.

COAS confirms death row to 11 terrorists

RAWALPINDI, May 3 (APP): Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif on Tuesday confirmed death sentences awarded to 11 more hardcore terrorists, who were found guilty of heinous offences related to terrorism including killing and kidnapping civilians, attacking Armed Forces and  Law Enforcement Agencies, destruction of schools and communication infrastructure.

The convicts were tried by military courts, according to ISPR press release.

The convict Muhammad Umar s/o Deer Khan was an active member of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. He was involved in attacking Armed Forces of Pakistan and Law Enforcement Agencies which resulted in death of soldiers and injuries to police officials.

Pakistan growing despite ‘costly’ war on terrorism: Dar

ISLAMABAD, May 3 (APP): Pakistan has been beleaguered by
terrorism and security “challenges” but was still managing to
focus on growth and job creation, Finance Minister Senator
Mohammad Ishaq Dar told CNBC international.

“Pakistan’s economy has shown great resilience against
the global trend of developing countries and the emerging markets which have seen negative declines,” Muhammad Ishaq Dar told the channel.

Ishaq Dar is currently leading a Pakistani delegation at
the annual meeting of Asian Development Bank (ADB) in Frankfurth (Germany). “We have shown seven year high growth in the last fiscal
year and in the current year we hope to cross 5 percent.
