US returns 192 stolen artifacts to Pakistan; Consul General Ayesha Ali expresses ‘gratitude’

US returns 192 stolen artifacts, worth $34.4 mln, to Pakistan

NEW YORK, Nov 12 (APP):The United States has returned 192 stolen antiquities — valued at nearly $3.4 million — to Pakistan, after an investigation into a notorious Indian-American art dealer, Subhash Kapoor, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in New York announced Friday.

The announcement said that 187 of the artifacts were recovered from Kapoor, identifying him as “one of the world’s most prolific antiquities traffickers.”

The art pieces and artifacts were returned at a special repatriation ceremony hosted by the Pakistan Consulate, where Consul General Ayesha Ali welcomed the Chief Operating Officer, District Attorney’s Office, Wesley Gibson, and US Homeland Security Investigations Assistant Special Agent-in-Chare Thomas Acocella.

Thanking them for their “tremendous” amount of work in recovering the stolen antiquities, Ayesha Ali said, “We cherish our rich cultural heritage and we are happy to receive the treasurers back, which will be returned to Pakistani museums to be seen by hundreds and thousands of Pakistanis and others from around the world.”

Pakistan, she said, continues to encourage tourism along the ancient routes and centers of this art.

“On behalf of the people of Pakistan,” the consul general added, “please accept our huge gratitude for the tremendous work you do”.

The art pieces and artifacts included a Gandharan statute depicting a maitreya, or an enlightened form of the Buddha, which was looted from Pakistan and smuggled into New York during the 1990s.

Kapoor had owned an art gallery in New York called Art of the Past and a side business that specialized in selling antiquities from southeast Asia when he was accused of smuggling and selling stolen artifacts.

The antiquities were looted from a Neolithic archaeological site in Pakistan before being trafficked to New York. They were placed in a storage unit rented by agents of the Art of the Past until their seizure by U.S. authorities this year.

The archaeological site of Mehrgarh in Pakistan was discovered by archaeologists in 1974 and subsequently faced looting.

Kapoor was arrested in October 2011 at Frankfurt International Airport in Germany and extradited the following year to India on charges of having received stolen artifacts from temples in southern India, which he then sold to museums around the world, according to the announcement.

He has been held in an Indian jail ever since and was convicted of receiving stolen property, habitually dealing in stolen property, and conspiracy by a special court in Kumbakonam, India, last week. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison and ordered to pay a fine.

In the United States, the office of former Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. obtained a warrant for Kapoor’s arrest in 2012 and he was formally indicted with seven co-defendants in a conspiracy to traffic the stolen antiquities in 2019.

Snjeeve Asokan, a co-defendant in the New York case against Kapoor, was also convicted and sentenced by the Indian court.

Prosecutors in the U.S. also previously sought to have Kapoor extradited and said they are “continuing to pursue prosecution.”

Two other co-defendants in the New York case have already been convicted, including Richard Salmon in 2020 and Neil Perry in 2021. Three other co-conspirators were also convicted.

“Subhash Kapoor was one of the world’s most prolific antiquities traffickers, yet thanks to the work of our dedicated investigators and analysts, we have been able to recover thousands of pieces looted by his network,” Manhattan District Attorney Bragg said.

“We will continue to pursue full accountability against Mr. Kapoor and his co-conspirators, who showed a blatant disregard for the cultural and historic significant of these antiquities.”

In her remarks, Consul General Ayesha Ali also thanked the District Attorney and his team for their personal vigilance and commitment in returning the stolen artifacts as well as the Department of Homeland Security for its vital role in ensuring that the criminal networks led by Subash Kapoor and others engaged in theft and smuggling of valuable cultural heritage are being purused and prosecuted.

“It is never an easy task and involves teamwork, very painstaking investigation and personal leadership,” she added.

ISLAMABAD, Nov 12 (APP): Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb said on Saturday that PTI Chairman Imran Khan compromised national interests for personal political gains.

In a statement, she said Imran Khan who was a foreign agent made mockery of himself, the country and the nation.

The minister said now all the antics of Imran Khan had been exposed, who she opined had been running a show since the 2014 sit-in.

Castigating Imran Khan, she said four years of PTI rule was a classic example of inefficiency, incompetence and lies.

Imran Khan destroyed employment opportunities and caused inflation as PTI would be remembered for four years of loot and plunder in the country. Referring to Tosha Khana, she said gifted watches and necklaces were looted.

She said Imran abused opponents, ran dirty campaigns against martyrs and instigated a revolt against national institutions.

The minister said the time had come to stop Imran’s dirty drama targeting opponents and institutions.

UN inquiry panel completes hearings on Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh's killing

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 12 (APP): United Nations investigators Friday wrapped up the hearings on the killing of veteran US-Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh and other Israeli actions in occupied Palestine territory, after her family members testified that she had been deliberately targeted as part of the Jewish State’s “wide-scale war” on Palestinian media workers.

The week-long hearings were hosted by the Commission of Inquiry (COI) created by the Geneva-based UN Human Rights Council last year to probe the root causes of the decades-long Middle East conflict.

Speaking to the investigators, the slain journalists niece Lina Abu Akleh said it was “painful beyond words” to think about how her aunt died, insisting there was no doubt Israeli soldiers “were deliberately targeting my aunt.”

The longtime Al Jazeera reporter was wearing a bulletproof vest marked “Press” and a helmet when she was shot in the head during an army operation in Jenin refugee camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank on May 11.

The objective of the UN inquiry was twofold, explained Commissioner Chris Sidoti: First, to understand the designation of seven Palestinian non-Government organizations, human rights organizations, as unlawful organizations and six of them as terrorist organisations.

Recording first-hand information on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh formed the second part of the week’s activities.

“These are not the sole focus of our investigation at all, but rather we see them as particularly significant in giving us a better understanding of the overall situation of civic space, civil society and throughout that region, throughout the occupied Palestinian territories and Israel”. Sidoti added.

In total, 13 witnesses and victims of civil society organizations and legal representatives provided testimony to Commissioners Navi Pillay, Sidoti and Miloon Kothari at the public forum.

Akleh, an experienced television journalist, who was very familiar with reporting in the occupied Palestinian territory, was killed as she attempted to report on an arrest operation by Israeli Security Forces and clashes in Jenin refugee camp in the northern occupied West Bank.

Following her killing, the UN human rights office, OHCHR, said that Israeli forces were behind the fatal shooting, and not indiscriminate Palestinian firing.

In September, the Israeli authorities announced that there was a “high possibility” that Ms. Abu Akleh had been hit accidentally by the Israeli military.

It is really important for these public hearings to be held because it allows us the space to share our testimonies, the experience and the suffering we had to endure over the past six months, but also it allows our voices to get across and our messages and our demands. It’s because it’s unfortunate that the Commission of Inquiry cannot access the territories”, Lina Abu Akleh said.

“The lack of accountability, the lack of justice is what pushed me to advocate for my Aunt Shireen”, she added. “It’s the importance of getting justice and getting her message across, is what continues to push me towards our pursuit”.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had contacted Rana Sanaullah and wished him good health.

UN chief upholds importance of a single global economy

0

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 12 (APP):Amid geopolitical divides threatening to spark new conflicts and make older ones harder to resolve, the global economy cannot afford to be split into two opposing camps, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on Saturday.

Mr. Guterres was speaking to journalists a day after addressing regional leaders attending the 12th Summit between the UN and the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), according to a UN press release issued in New York.

“As I told yesterday’s summit meeting, we must avoid at all costs the division of the global economy into two parts, led by the two biggest economies – the United States and China,” he said.

“Such a rift, with two different sets of rules, two dominant currencies, two internets, and two conflicting strategies on artificial intelligence, would undermine the world’s capacity to respond to the dramatic challenges we face.”

He said ASEAN countries are well placed to bridge this divide, stressing that “we must have one global economy and global market with access for all.”

The UN chief also reported on some of the issues discussed at the summit, including the situation in Myanmar which he described as “an unending nightmare for the people of that country, and a threat to peace and security across the region.”

Myanmar’s military seized power in February 2021 and since then, the country has been in the grip of a political, human rights and humanitarian crisis.

Guterres said ASEAN has taken a principled approach to the issue through its Five-Point Consensus.

The plan was adopted in April 2021 and calls for an immediate cessation of violence, constructive dialogue among the parties, appointment of a Special Envoy, provision of humanitarian assistance, and a visit to the country by the Special Envoy.

“I urge all countries, including ASEAN members, to seek a unified strategy towards Myanmar, centred on the needs and aspirations of the country’s people,” he said.

The war in Ukraine, the global energy and food crisis, and the climate emergency were also on the agenda at the day-long summit.

“In these turbulent times, regional organizations including ASEAN are essential to building global solutions,” Guterres told reporters.

The Secretary-General travelled to Cambodia from Egypt, where the COP27 UN climate change conference is underway.

The UN chief will next travel to Bali, Indonesia, for the G20 summit of the world’s major economies, which begins on Tuesday.

“My priority in Bali will be to speak up for countries in the Global South that have been battered by the COVID-19 pandemic and the climate emergency, and now face crises in food, energy and finance – exacerbated by the war in Ukraine and crushing debt,” he said.

Guterres said he wants G20 leaders to adopt a stimulus package to provide developing countries with much-needed investments and liquidity.

The UN, he said, is also working to alleviate the global food crisis by extending a landmark initiative to get Ukrainian grain back on markets, and by removing obstacles to the Russian food and fertilizers exports.
