Chengdu’s “Little Green Peppers” redefine hospitality at The World Games 2025

CHENGDU, China, Aug 15 (APP):At every turn of the Chengdu World Games, a sea of uniformed helpers ensures no guest ever feels lost. Affectionately called “Little Green Peppers”, this strong volunteer corps, consisting of over 8,600 members, has become the beating heart of this mega event, combining military precision with grandmotherly warmth.

Their exceptional service has left an indelible mark on international guests, including this APP correspondent who experienced their care firsthand. The magic began when I stored my bag in a media centre locker before the opening ceremony. In the post-ceremony rush, I hurried in the wrong direction – until a familiar voice called out: “Hello sir, I think you need to retrieve your bag?” It was the same volunteer who had guided our press bus earlier. Astonishingly, he remembered my locker inquiry from hours before. “I heard you asking at the help desk,” he explained with a smile before personally escorting me to the correct building. Later, I discovered this unassuming guide was actually a linguistics teacher from Southwest Jiaotong University.

“Our volunteers are called ‘Little Green Peppers’ for good reason,” Yanhong Tang, head of the volunteer programme in the Main Media Centre, told APP in an exclusive interview. “Green Peppers represent vigour, youth, education and environmental protection. These young people showcase Chengdu’s vitality to the world.”
The selection process proved extraordinarily rigorous. “We received thousands of applications from universities and finally selected 100 to serve at the Main Media Centre. Yanhong explained. “Candidates underwent multiple interview rounds, assessing language skills, professional competence, communication ability and teamwork.”
The chosen 100 for the MMC then completed what Yanhong called “14 types of diverse training” – from cultural sensitivity drills to emergency medical response. My personal “Little Green Pepper”, a university student Mona Zhou, embodies this training perfectly. She does not just assist – she anticipates needs before they arise. “I noticed you’re covering squash and billiards,” she said on day two, presenting a customized schedule. When I mentioned struggling with Chengdu’s heat, she appeared with cooling herbal tea. “We train to read subtle cues,” she explained. “Real service means solving problems before guests notice them.”
The system’s effectiveness resonated across the Games: “Other countries host games; China elevates them,” observed Pakistani cueist Muhammad Asif. “At other events, volunteers help when asked. Here, they approach you first,” noted an Iranian journalist. “They’ve installed an invisible support network across the city,” remarked a German athlete.
As I prepare to depart Chengdu, the most lasting memories won’t be medal performances, but of volunteer-dressed ambassadors who redefined service excellence. More than volunteers, they’ve become the gold standard in global event hospitality, proving flawless organization and human warmth are not opposites, but inseparable partners.

NEW YORK, Aug 15 (APP): Pakistan and the Federated States of Micronesia, an island nation located in the western Pacific Ocean, established diplomatic relations at a ceremony in New York on Thursday.

Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, and Federated States of Micronesia’s counterpart, Ambassador Jeem S. Lippwe, signed a joint communiqué to formalize the relationship between the two countries.

The signing ceremony, held at the Pakistan Mission to the UN, was attended by the diplomats of the two countries, including, the Deputy Permanent Representative, Ambassador Usman Jadoon.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad said that he was truly glad as the diplomatic relations between the two countries were being established on Pakistan’s Independence Day anniversary.

The ties, he said, would open up avenues for cooperation in the field of human resource management, capacity building and climate change. He said that both Missions would work closely on key matters, especially promotion of international peace and security at the United Nations.

He said he was happy to learn that Pakistan was the 100th country with which Micronesia was establishing its relations.

In his remarks, Ambassador Lippwe expressed his pleasure at the start of a new chapter in bilateral relations. He said that he was privileged to be representing his country at the formal start of a journey of friendship and partnership with Pakistan.

He thanked Pakistan for extending support to his country for opening of the United Nations offices there. He said that he looked forward to working closely with his Pakistani counterpart to strengthen the bond of friendship.

He conveyed his congratulations on Pakistan’s Independence Day.

Before the ceremony, both the Ambassadors held a brief meeting during which they discussed possible areas of cooperation, both bilaterally as well as at the UN.

Tributes paid to Pakistan’s founding fathers & defenders at 79th Independence Day in New York

NEW YORK, Aug 14 (APP): The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations and the Consulate General of Pakistan in New York held a solemn flag-hoisting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the 78th anniversary of Pakistan’s independence at which high tributes were paid to the nation’s founding fathers as well as its defenders.

Held at the chancery building, the ceremony was attended by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Permanent Representative of Pakistan to the UN, Consul General Aamer Ahmad Atozai, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan, officers and staff members of the Mission as well as of the Consulate, according to a press release of the Pakistani mission.

Speaking on the occasion, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar paid rich tribute to Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Allama Dr. Muhammad Iqbal and workers of the Pakistan Movement for their historic and inspirational role in the nation’s democratic, constitutional, and political struggle for independence.

Pakistan’s creation in just seven years, he said, was nothing short of a miracle– a testament to the vision, meticulous planning, and determined implementation by its leadership and people.

Highlighting the nation’s “double jubilation” this year, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar celebrated Pakistan’s comprehensive triumph in Marak-e-Haq and Bunyan-um-Marsoos, which thwarted Indian aggression in May. This was not only a military victory, but also a significant achievement in the domains of diplomacy and information — a comprehensive success at all levels that has renewed the nation’s confidence in its abilities to counter all threats to its security, he said.

The Pakistani envoy paid heartfelt tribute to the country’s military leadership, martyrs, and Ghazis, whose unparalleled contributions in defending the motherland — whether against Indian aggression or in the fight against terrorism — will forever be cherished.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu & Kashmir (IIOJK), grounded in the principle of the right to self-determination, and expressed solidarity with all oppressed peoples, especially the Palestinians.

He also lauded the contributions of Pakistan’s Mission to the United Nations in projecting Pakistan’s role as a strong advocate for peace, stability, sustainable development goals, human rights and climate action.

Pakistan, he stressed, remains a reliable partner in promoting global peace and security.

In his remarks, Aamer Ahmad Atozai, Consul General of Pakistan in New York, stated that this year, the celebration is intertwined with pride in the recent victory of Marka-e-Haq, crowned by the success of Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos. He said that these moments remind us that the defence of Pakistan is not an abstract ideal, but a living reality—secured each day by the courage, discipline, and sacrifice of the country’s Armed Forces and law-enforcement agencies.

“Today, we remember our ‘shuhada’ and ‘ghazis’ with deep respect and gratitude,” he stated.

He said that while serving abroad, “our duty is to protect Pakistan’s interests, represent its values with dignity, and ensure that every action—whether in diplomacy, administration, or service delivery—reflects the highest standards of professionalism.”

Officers — Muhammad Faheem, Muhammad Rashid and Muhammad Imran — read out the messages of President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan, Ishaq Dar, respectively.
