ISLAMABAD, Jul 21 (APP):Rawal Dam’s spillways, which were opened early morning to release excess water following heavy rains, have been closed after a five-hour discharge.
The water level, which had prompted authorities to open the gates, has now returned to a safer mark.
The district administration closed the spillways of Rawal Dam on Monday after the water level dropped to 1747 feet. Earlier in the day, the gates were opened at 6 AM when the reservoir touched 1748 feet, nearing its maximum storage capacity.
The spokesman of ICT administration said the release of water continued for five hours to manage the rising levels caused by rainfall in Murree and adjoining areas. After the discharge, the water level in the dam decreased by one foot, reaching 1747 feet.
Before opening the spillways, the administration had stationed teams from Rescue 1122 and other relevant departments at bridges and along seasonal streams to ensure safety measures were in place.
Assistant Commissioner Islamabad personally monitored the controlled discharge process and coordinated with emergency teams to manage any potential risks.
Authorities continue to monitor the dam’s water level closely in anticipation of more rainfall in the coming days.
