ISLAMABAD, Dec 05 (APP): In a remarkable ascent for one of Pakistan’s youngest public universities, the National Skills University Islamabad (NSU) has been ranked second-best in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT)in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings 2025, just behind Allama Iqbal Open University.
This recent recognition underscored NSU’s rising global profile and commitment to sustainability. At the national level, NSU secured an impressive 12th position, a milestone that places it firmly among the country’s most sustainability-driven higher education institutions, said a press release on Friday.
The main campus of the NSU is in Islamabad’s H-8 sector. NSU has rapidly emerged as a model for environmentally conscious campus development, an achievement made more striking given that the university is only six years old. Its reputation now extends far beyond Pakistan.
The European Training Foundation has recognized NSU as a Centre of Vocational Excellence, while UNESCO-UNEVOC has designated it as a highly progressive skills and innovation hub. In the past year alone, NSU clinched two international awards under the UNESCO-UNEVOC Coaction initiative, underscoring its growing global relevance. These accomplishments demonstrate NSU’s commitment to excellence and innovation, reassuring stakeholders of its credibility and influence
Academic leaders credit the university’s rise to its founding vice chancellor, Prof. Dr Muhammad Mukhtar, whose unwavering emphasis on sustainability, green infrastructure, and skills-oriented education has shaped NSU’s institutional culture.
Colleagues describe him as a leader who “builds green campuses not as a trend but as a long-term responsibility to the planet and its people.” This leadership has propelled NSU to receive international recognition, including awards that highlight its commitment to sustainable development and innovation on a global scale.
This year’s UI GreenMetric edition evaluated 1,745 universities across 105 countries, making it the world’s most extensive ranking system dedicated to measuring sustainability in higher education. Against such global competition, NSU’s performance signals not just local achievement but a promise of what a skills-focused, environmentally responsible university can contribute to Pakistan’s academic future.
