NDMA cautions public on weather hazards in northern, western areas

ISLAMABAD, Mar 18 (APP):The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) on Wednesday issued a precautionary alert for rain and snowfall in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), rain accompanied by thunderstorms is likely in various parts of the country during the next 12 to 24 hours. Rain is also forecast in Islamabad and several cities of Punjab, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Faisalabad, and Multan.
In Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, rain and snowfall are expected, with possible road disruptions in mountainous terrain. Forecasts indicate that Astore, Skardu, Hunza, and Neelum Valley are likely to receive precipitation during the current spell.
Rain and hailstorms are forecast in Quetta, Zhob, Ziarat, Qila Saifullah, Qila Abdullah, and Gwadar districts of Balochistan.
Water accumulation in low-lying areas and disruption to traffic flow are likely, while rain and snowfall are expected in Chitral, Swat, Dir, Peshawar, and other parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The precipitation is forecast to continue in upper areas from March 18 to 21.
Authorities have cautioned that the risk of avalanches and landslides may increase during the spell, urging citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and exercise caution in landslide-prone areas.
The NDMA has directed relevant departments to adopt precautionary measures, while its NEOC is ensuring timely dissemination of information to the public and institutions regarding evolving risks.
