ILO chief praises Pakistan’s commitment to worker welfare, migration transition

ISLAMABAD, Jun 10 (APP): International Labour Organisation Director General Gilbert F. Houngbo has praised Pakistan for its commitment to international labor standards, highlighting its proactive measures in worker welfare, social protection, and the smooth transition of migrant workers.
He conveyed his appreciation during a meeting with Chaudhry Salik Hussain, Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, held on the sidelines of the International Labour Conference in Geneva.
Chaudhry Salik Hussain apprised the DG-ILO of the steps taken by the government of Pakistan in line with its international commitments for the welfare, social protection, and occupational safety and health of workers.
The minister mentioned that his government is committed to the betterment of workers and has taken various measures to encourage legal migration, ensuring safety and job security.
He said Pakistan is the region’s only country which showed this commitment and resolve by ratifying three conventions in a short span of time.

He said in this regard, MOU’s for skilled and semi skilled work force are being signed or under process with various countries.
Chaudhry Salik Hussain informed the Director General of the International Labour Organization that measures have been taken to ensure migrant workers receive training aligned with the customs, traditions, basic language, and work ethics of their destination country, enabling them to become valuable and productive members of the workforce.
The minister requested for enhanced technical and donor assistance for the ratification of convention C-176 related to the safety and health of the mine workers.
Chaudhry Salik Hussain also lauded the role of the ILO’s Country Office for assistance and continued support to his Ministry.
In his remarks, the Director-General of the International Labour Organization praised Pakistan for being the only country to ratify three ILO conventions this year. Minister was accompanied by the Permanent Representative of Pakistan’s mission at Geneva, Bilal Ahmad and Secretary Workers Welfare Fund, Zulfiqar Ahmad, JS of MOPHRD and Workers Delegate Zahoor Awan.
