IGP NHMP orders special traffic plan, strict enforcement for Eid-ul-Fitr travel

Inspector General of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) Sultan Ahmed Chaudhry on Tuesday directed officers across the country to implement comprehensive traffic management measures to ensure safe and smooth travel for commuters during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

ISLAMABAD, Mar 10 (APP):Inspector General of the National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) Sultan Ahmed Chaudhry on Tuesday directed officers across the country to implement comprehensive traffic management measures to ensure safe and smooth travel for commuters during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr holidays.

He issued the directives while chairing the monthly Regional Conference of the Motorway Police, which was attended by Additional Inspectors General and Deputy Inspectors General representing various zones from across the country, said a press release.

During the meeting, a comprehensive review of the overall performance of all zones nationwide was conducted. Key operational matters, traffic management, and road safety measures were also discussed in detail.

The participants also deliberated on future plans and strategies to further enhance operational effectiveness. Addressing the participants, IG Sultan Ahmed Chaudhry directed strict implementation of austerity and fuel conservation measures in view of the prevailing global and regional situation.

He also directed officers to make special arrangements to ensure safe, smooth, and comfortable travel for commuters during the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr holidays. The IG directed strict action against public service vehicles (PSVs) involved in overcharging passengers during the Eid travel rush. He also emphasized zero tolerance against overloading and directed officers to ensure strict compliance with the prescribed passenger capacity limits.

Furthermore, he ordered thorough checking of luggage compartments (trunks) of PSVs to prevent the illegal transportation of passengers. He also directed strict checking of fitness certificates and route permits of public service vehicles during Eid travel operations. Special attention was also directed towards accident-prone locations and identified black spots to enhance preventive measures against road traffic accidents.

IG Motorway Police emphasized that no compromise will be made on traffic violations, particularly over-speeding, lane violations, and reckless driving.

He also directed that the standard of motorway patrolling be further strengthened to ensure effective enforcement and timely assistance to road users.

He further directed that in view of the expected traffic rush and potential security concerns before and after Eid, additional staff should be deployed at toll plazas. He also directed that effective coordination be maintained with the concerned authorities to ensure the opening of maximum toll booths during peak hours so that the smooth flow of traffic is maintained.

The IG also directed the launch of targeted road safety awareness campaigns across the country to promote safe driving practices and compliance with traffic laws, aiming to raise public awareness and reduce road traffic accidents.
