ISLAMABAD, Mar 27 (APP): Chairman of the Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has approved the surrender of Rs265 million to the national exchequer as an immediate step to support the country’s finances.

Following his instructions, the Senate Secretariat reviewed its expenses and returned the amount to the Finance Division.

The move is part of the austerity drive announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Gilani directed the Secretariat to fully implement austerity measures and continue efforts to cut spending.

He said more savings are being identified and may also be deposited in the national exchequer in the coming weeks.

He stressed that the Senate understands the need for financial discipline in the current economic situation and remains committed to supporting the government’s efforts for stability.

The chairman also instructed officials to reduce unnecessary expenses, lower operational costs, and use resources more efficiently, while ensuring that parliamentary work and legislative duties continue without disruption.

Reaffirming support for the government’s economic policies, Gilani expressed confidence that better financial management and joint efforts by institutions will help strengthen the national economy.

The Senate Secretariat said it will continue to follow transparent financial practices while protecting public funds and ensuring smooth parliamentary operations.
