ISLAMABAD, Mar 09 (APP): Friends of Kashmir organised a special programme in Dallas, Texas, on International Women’s Day where speakers highlighted the challenges faced by women in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Indian-administered areas, and called on the international community to take practical steps to address alleged human rights violations.
The event brought together prominent members of the Kashmiri diaspora and a large number of women from the community who discussed the hardships faced by Kashmiri women and expressed solidarity with their struggle.
Chairperson of the programme, Ghazala Habib, in her address shed light on the difficulties faced by women in Indian-administered Kashmir, including detentions and restrictions on political expression.
She specifically referred to the case of Aasiya Andrabi and her fellow activists who remain imprisoned in India, stating that their only “offence” was raising their voices for freedom from Indian rule.
Other speakers, including Maulana Aseel Khan, Ashraf Bashir, Barkat Baseeria, Fatima Mir, Talat Khan and Zainab Ali, also addressed the gathering.
They highlighted issues such as forced detentions, human rights concerns and the broader challenges faced by Kashmiri women in the region.
Participants of the event reiterated their solidarity with the Kashmiri people’s struggle and stressed the importance of raising global awareness about the situation.
At the conclusion of the programme, attendees urged the international community to take concrete measures in support of Kashmiri women and ensure the protection of their fundamental rights.
