FCCP seeks record on Gilgit-Baltistan proposed legislation, hearing adjourned

ISLAMABAD, Apr 6 (APP):The Federal Constitutional Court of Pakistan on Monday sought a detailed record from the government regarding proposed legislation related to Gilgit-Baltistan and adjourned the hearing.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi heard the case. During the proceedings, Justice Rizvi observed that instead of litigation, such matters should be discussed with senior political leadership.
Justice Rozi Khan observed that the issue appeared to be political in nature and should be resolved by the government itself.
Additional Attorney General Aamir Rehman informed the court that while the government is competent to legislate, permission was being sought in light of a decision of the Supreme Court of Pakistan.
He submitted that there was currently no legislation regarding the pension of the Chief Justice and other judges of Gilgit-Baltistan, and proposals were under consideration to address this matter.
Also, he added that a proposal was also being considered to fix the term of members of the Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly at five years.
Justice Karim Khan Agha remarked that such legislation are usually not done out in a hasty manner and require further deliberations.
The court subsequently directed the government to submit details of the proposed legislation and adjourned further hearing of the case.
