COMSTECH, IUT to host Strategic Science Communication Training in Bangladesh on April 15-16

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (OIC-COMSTECH), in close collaboration with the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), has announced a high-level Strategic Science Communication Training to be held on April 15 and 16 at the IUT campus in Gazipur, Bangladesh.

ISLAMABAD, Mar 26 (APP):The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (OIC-COMSTECH), in close collaboration with the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), has announced a high-level Strategic Science Communication Training to be held on April 15 and 16 at the IUT campus in Gazipur, Bangladesh.

Organised under the broader theme of “Building Bridges Between Scientists and Journalists for Knowledge Advancement in Bangladesh,” the programme marks a significant institutional commitment to strengthening the interface between scientific knowledge and its public dissemination across the OIC region.

Science communication is essential for strengthening public trust, promoting evidence-based policymaking, and advancing knowledge-driven development — a principle that sits at the very heart of this initiative.

The training is conceived as a hybrid event, welcoming participants both in-person at the IUT premises and online from across the globe, ensuring broad access for stakeholders who cannot attend physically.

A total of 40 to 50 participants will be selected for physical participation, drawn from a diverse pool of scientists, researchers, journalists, media professionals, science communicators, university faculty, students, policymakers, and institutional representatives.

The hybrid format underscores COMSTECH’s commitment to inclusivity and its recognition that science communication capacity must be built at every level of society, not merely within elite academic corridors.

The programme will feature expert-led interactive sessions, participatory workshops, in-depth case studies, and structured dialogue forums between scientists and media personnel.

These formats have been deliberately chosen to move beyond passive learning, compelling participants to engage directly with the practical challenges of translating complex scientific findings into accessible, accurate, and impactful public narratives.

Speakers for the event include, both in-person and online, Prof. Dr. Syed Javaid Khurshid, Dr. Mumtaz Aini Binti Alivi, Dr. Maha Lakshami Arujannan, Mr. Muhammad Arif Goheer, Dr. Najam Abbas Naqvi, Dr. Wajid Zulqarnain, and Mr. Sayyed Paras Ali, representing a rich cross-section of scientific and communication expertise from across the OIC membership.

The four principal objectives of the training are clearly articulated in the programme framework: to strengthen science communication skills across verbal, written, and multimedia modalities; to bridge the persistent gap between the scientific community and the journalistic profession; to align science communication practices with Bangladesh’s national development priorities; and to foster sustainable professional networks that will outlast the training itself.

These objectives reflect a mature understanding that one-off interventions rarely produce lasting change, and that systemic improvement in science communication requires the cultivation of ongoing relationships and institutional memory.

The expected impact of the training, as outlined by COMSTECH, encompasses enhanced communication competencies among participants, stronger science-media collaboration frameworks, practical and deployable strategies to address national development challenges through evidence, and an expanded professional network connecting participants not only within Bangladesh but across OIC Member States more broadly.

These outcomes align directly with COMSTECH’s overarching mandate to advance scientific and technological cooperation among Muslim-majority nations and to ensure that the dividends of scientific progress are communicated effectively to inform public discourse and policy.

The event is organised by OIC-COMSTECH in collaboration with IUT, with partner institutions including OIC-GS, UTIM, and SESRIC, under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Iqbal Choudhary HI, SI, TI, CG, Patron-in-Chief of OIC-COMSTECH.

The coordination is led by Prof. Dr. Syed Javaid Khurshid, reachable at sjavaidk@comstech.org or +92 (051) 9220681, and by Prof. Dr. Md. Hasanul Kabir of IUT, contactable at hasanul@iut.dhaka.edu or +880 1715007049.
