UNITED NATIONS, Oct 9 (APP):The US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley has resigned from her role in the Trump administration, according to American media reports.
Axios news site, citing two people familiar with the matter, reported on Tuesday that President Trump accepted Haley’s resignation, but that it was unclear when she would depart.
CNN and The New York Times are also reporting her resignation.
Haley told her staff that she planned to resign, according to NBC News.
Haley, the former Republican governor of South Carolina, joined the administration in 2017 just four days after Trump officially took office. She had reportedly discussed leaving her position last week with Trump at the White House.
Born as Nimrata Randhawa to Sikh parents who migrated from Indian Punjab, Haley created history by becoming the first woman to occupy the governor’s mansion of South Carolina.
She has since converted to Christianity, but occasionally goes to Sikh services at her parents’ request.
Haley, 46, is married to Michael Haley, an officer in US defence department.
“Big announcement with my friend Ambassador Nikki Haley in the Oval Office at 10:30 am,” Trump tweeted.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced on Twitter shortly after the reports surfaced that Trump and Haley would meet in the Oval Office later today.
