LONDON, Sep 29 (AA/APP): Spain’s meteorological agency on Sunday issued a red warning for heavy rains in eastern regions, prompting authorities to close schools and universities in Valencia on Monday.

Aemet, the country’s weather agency, issued an “extraordinary danger” warning for Tarragona, Castellon, and Valencia on Sunday evening and Monday.

Citing the weather alert, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez urged citizens to always follow civil protection and emergency services instructions.

Meanwhile, schools and universities will be closed in Valencia on Monday, as will public spaces such as libraries, parks, and markets.

Valencia residents received a red alert on their phones Sunday afternoon, warning of severe weather that could exceed 250-300 mm, posing the risk of flash flooding and watercourses overflowing.

Last year, at least 232 people died in eastern Spain as a result of severe weather, torrential rain, and flash flooding.
