SARGODHA, May 21 (APP):With soaring temperatures across the city and its outskirts, sugarcane juice vendors are witnessing a sharp rise in business. Roadside stalls are drawing crowds of motorists and pedestrians alike, all seeking relief from the heat in the form of a chilled glass of freshly extracted juice.
According to observations by the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP), sugarcane juice is not only refreshing but also offers notable health benefits. It contains live enzymes and nutrients that are quickly absorbed by the body, providing instant nourishment. The juice is rich in essential minerals such as calcium, potassium, magnesium, iron, and zinc, as well as vitamins that support liver function, skin health, and hydration.
“It’s healthy and refreshing during the summer. I always prefer it over soft drinks when I’m out shopping,” said Haji Ghulam Rasool, a local resident. He added that his wife also uses sugarcane juice in traditional recipes. “She makes rasawali kheer using sugarcane juice instead of milk. It’s different from the usual version—and tastier too.”
Another citizen, Ghulam Shabbir, shared his preferred variation: “I like to add lemon and ginger to my sugarcane juice. It makes it easier to digest and gives it a nice flavor.”
Vendors, too, are enjoying the seasonal boost. Chacha Sultan, who operates a stall in the 85 Jhal area, said, “We set up around 10 a.m. and sell until 5 p.m. Business is good now, and I’m expecting it to get even better in the coming days.”
Nasir Nawaz, a local shopkeeper whose family has been in the juice business for over five decades, noted the year-round demand for sugarcane juice, though summer remains the peak season. “It’s the most popular drink in summer. We sell it in both winter and summer, but most people visit in hot weather. It’s also more affordable than most fresh fruit juices.”
Health professionals also endorse sugarcane juice for its natural benefits, though they advise caution regarding hygiene. Dr. Muhammad Waqas Naeem said, “It’s good for the liver, skin, and general hydration. It helps reduce cholesterol and supports healthy blood production. But people should be cautious—juice made with unclean equipment can pose serious health risks.”
He stressed the importance of consuming juice from clean and hygienic vendors, as poor sanitation can lead to infections such as hepatitis.
As temperatures continue to climb, sugarcane juice remains a popular and accessible way for many to stay cool and healthy—offering not just refreshment, but a long-standing link to tradition and well-being.
