With water level reaching 1,750 ft, Rawal Dam’s spillways opened: Commissioner Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI, Jul 22 (APP):Commissioner Rawalpindi Engineer Aamir Khattak on Tuesday said with the water level in Rawal Dam reaching  1,750 feet, it had been decided to open its spillways to reduce the water pressure.
The Rawalpindi Administration, he said, was high on alert and was taking all necessary steps for the safety of people in low-lying areas for the expected deluge in the River Sawan.
The workforce of all the departments concerned were in the field and ready to deal with any untoward situation, he added.
Commissioner Khattak was presiding over a meeting at his office., which was attended by Additional Commissioner Coordination Syed Nazart Ali, Deputy Commissioner Rawalpindi Hassan Waqar Cheema, Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation chief executive officer and other administrative officers. The deputy commissioners of Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal and Murree participated through video link.
The commissioner directed the Revenue Department to immediately start assessment of about 1,000 small dams, which were handed over by the Abad to the farmers, and strengthen them by taking the owners (farmers) on board.
He further instructed the deputy commissioners to complete the damage assessment reports of the previous rain-spell soon. “The report should be fair and ensure that the government’s aid reaches deserving people,” he added.
The commissioner advised the people to refrain from approaching the rivers, nullahs and drains during the ongoing rainy season and to cooperate with the administration.
He observed that the district control rooms were active 24 hours a day and could be contacted in case of any emergency.
The commissioner directed all municipal agencies to self -monitor the sanitation and drainage process. The Water and Sanitation Agency had also instructed to ensure early drainage of water soon after rains so that the citizens do not face difficulties, he added.
He further directed the Civil Defence, Rescue 1122 and Police to remain active under a joint strategy.
Emergency alerts had been issued in hospitals, he said, instructing the assistant commissioners to continue their field visits in their areas.
