RAWALPINDI, Feb 06 (APP):The Pakistan Thalassemia Welfare Society Rawalpindi -Islamabad (TWS), continues to provide essential support and treatment to children and individuals living with thalassemia while emphasizing that this hereditary disease can be prevented from affecting future generations through timely awareness and proper precautions.
These views were expressed by former provincial health minister and senior vice president of the society, Dr Jamal Nasir, during an executive committee meeting.
He stressed that thalassemia is not an incurable condition and called for greater promotion of pre-marital screening to protect new generation from this challenging disease.
Dr. Jamal Nasir praised the society for its strong performance in both treatment services and public awareness campaigns. He described the organization as a bright example of serving humanity without discrimination, providing free treatment, blood transfusions, and other necessary facilities to deserving patients.
He further stated that coordinated efforts between the government and philanthropists could effectively control thalassemia in the country. Dr. Nasir expressed determination to expand the mission nationwide so that every child can look forward to a healthy future.
The meeting was attended by TWS Chairman Major General (retd) Professor Sohail Ahmed, In-charge Bone Marrow Transplant Center Major General (retd) Pervez Ahmed, Brigadier Kamran, Dr. Qayyum Awan, Khalid Mahmood, Asad Ali Shah, and Director Dr. Nasir Mahmood.
Professor Sohail Ahmed highlighted the society’s achievements, noting that modern medical facilities, well-trained staff, and a transparent system have earned strong trust from patients and families. He reiterated that the ultimate vision of the Pakistan Thalassemia Welfare Society is not only to treat patients but to realise the dream of a completely thalassemia-free Pakistan.
Major General (retd) Pervez Ahmed informed participants that the Bone Marrow Transplant Centre has now received formal approval from the Health Care Commission and other relevant authorities, which, he said, was clear evidence of the institution’s high standards and credibility.
He appealed to philanthropists and the public to contribute generously through zakat and donations so that children suffering from thalassemia can receive the most advanced and effective treatment available.
The society’s leadership reaffirmed its commitment to further expanding services in the coming years and engaging every section of society in this important national cause to achieve the complete elimination of thalassemia across Pakistan.
