MULTAN, Oct 29 (APP):The administration has intensified the ongoing anti-smog campaign across Multan Division to curb air pollution and protect public health. Commissioner Multan Division Amir Karim Khan chaired a meeting of the Divisional Anti-Smog Committee to review the progress of preventive and enforcement measures.
The meeting was attended by Deputy Commissioners, representatives of the Environment Department, Traffic Police, Waste Management Company, Agriculture, Transport, and other relevant departments.
Addressing the participants, Commissioner Amir Karim Khan said that smog poses a serious threat to human health and the environment. He directed all departments to take coordinated and emergency actions to reduce smog levels.
He stressed strict legal action against those involved in burning crop residues and solid waste, while industrial units causing pollution would face penalties and sealing after registration of FIRs. The Commissioner also ordered the immediate closure of brick kilns not converted to zigzag technology and directed that all kilns prominently display their assigned identification numbers.
To minimise environmental hazards, he instructed authorities to take legal action against owners of outdated battery-burning furnaces. The Transport and Traffic Police departments were also directed to take stern action against smoke-emitting vehicles and to intensify joint field operations in collaboration with the National Highway Authority.
The Waste Management Company was instructed to cover garbage-collecting trolleys and dumpers with nets to prevent the spread of dust and litter on roads.
Deputy Commissioner Multan Waseem Hamid Sindhu informed the meeting that smog counters have been established in hospitals and special beds allocated for affected patients. He said awareness campaigns are being conducted through mosque announcements, pamphlet distribution, and social media.
He added that joint teams from the Revenue, Agriculture, Environment, and Law Enforcement Departments are actively working in the field to ensure strict implementation of anti-smog directives across the division.
