SUKKUR, Aug 31 (APP): The provincial government has stepped up preparations for a potential super flood, with Minister for Irrigation Jam Khan Shoro, Secretary Zarif Khuhro, and Chief Engineer Sardar Shah briefing Chief Minister Sindh on the measures being taken to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
According to the briefing on Sunday, the Sindh Bund Manual has been prepared in line with guidelines for super floods, which include setting up four lanyards per mile and deploying 16 personnel for surveillance. The government has deployed over 5,000 personnel along the River Indus’ right and left banks, from Guddu to Sukkur Barrage, to monitor and maintain the bunds.
Several areas have been identified as extremely sensitive points, including Left Marginal Bund, KK Bund, KK Feeder Bund, New Ghorghatt X Bund, Old Tori Bund, and SB Bund on the right bank, and Qadirpur Shank Bund, Qadir Loop Bund, Rawanti Bund, Baiji Bund, and RN Bund on the left bank.
The government has made arrangements for night patrols, machinery deployment, and repair and strengthening of weak spots. Officers will be present 24/7 at sensitive locations to ensure swift action in case of emergencies.
The Chief Minister of Sindh has directed that preventive measures be further accelerated, sensitive bunds be closely monitored by utilizing essential machinery. He emphasized the need for swift action in case of emergencies and effective monitoring of weak spots.
The government is leaving no stone unturned in its preparations for the potential super flood, and it remains to be seen whether these efforts will be enough to mitigate the impact of the disaster.
