HYDERABAD, Nov 12 (APP): The Vice Chancellor of Sindh Agriculture University (SAU) Tandojam Engr. Prof. Dr. Altaf Ali Siyal on Wednesday emphasized that universities and research institutions must align their scientific studies with the emerging challenges of climate change, as new threats were arising each day due to shifting weather patterns.
According to a statement issued by the spokesperson of SAU, he was addressing the concluding session of a one-day training workshop organized by the department of plant breeding and genetics (PBG) on the theme “Bioinformatics, Sequence Retrieval, Gene Identification and Phylogenetic Analysis.”
Dr. Siyal said that research must remain relevant to time, environment and crop risks to ensure a sustainable future for agriculture. The Vice Chancellor added that SAU was actively promoting innovation through research, education, and practical training, preparing young scientists to meet global research standards and master modern bioinformatics tools.
Program organizer and Associate Professor Dr. Shabana Memon said the training introduced participants to bioinformatics, a rapidly growing field in modern biological research that uses computers to collect, analyze and interpret genetic information from plants and living organisms. She added that this approach allows researchers to identify and understand genetic traits that enhance crop performance and strengthen resilience against environmental stresses.
Dr. Memon further stated that such training programs were highly beneficial not only for students but also for researchers and agricultural officers, improving their technical and analytical skills while promoting research-based agricultural development in the country.
Chairman, department of plant breeding and genetics Dr. Shah Nawaz Mari remarked that emerging disciplines like bioinformatics and genomics were paving the way for the future of agriculture. The session was attended by M.Sc., Ph.D. and final-year undergraduate students as well as agricultural research officers from various departments.
