RDA holds session on Nullah Lai risks

RAWALPINDI, Feb 19 (APP):Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) here on Wednesday on the directives of Director General (DG) Kinza Murtaza organized a session to address the risks associated with Nullah Lai.
The session was organized in line with the vision of Chief Minister Punjab, Maryam Nawaz and the Green Pakistan initiative.
The discussion focused on critical issues impacting Nullah Lai, including urban flooding, pollution, infrastructure strain, community hesitance toward waste segregation, ensuring a safe and secure water flow downstream, and to manage sewerage water treatment in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Dr Yousuf Riaz, Chief Executive Officer, Green Life Foundation on the occasion outlined key strategies to mitigate these risks, including afforestation along the banks of Nullah Lai to aid water recycling and the implementation of flood forecasting.
The Chief Engineer RDA emphasized that expert recommendations would play a crucial role in managing sewerage treatment, addressing super floods, and mitigating peak flooding at its early stages.
He highlighted that the Green Pakistan initiative is vital for environmental sustainability, as a cleaner Nullah Lai would significantly improve both the local ecosystem and hygienic conditions in surrounding areas.
The session featured input from a diverse range of the stakeholders, including representatives from the NGOs, and other relevant organizations.
Discussions also covered the scope and timeline for implementing these strategies, with feedback collected from all the participants.
Dr. Naveed Iftikhar, urban economist, Director Land RDA, Ghazanfer Ali Awan, Director MP&TE, Muhammad Tahir Meo, Khawaja Mazhar Researcher, Ms. Marium Naveed Urban Planner, Sundus Shahid, Research Officer, as well as officials from RDA, WASA, and other key representatives attended the session.
