RAWALPINDI, Mar 28 (APP):The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Punjab has arrested two dangerous terrorists affiliated with ‘Fitna-ul-Khawarij’ from Rawalpindi during intelligence-based operations, while a total of 36 terrorists were apprehended across the province in the past one month, foiling a major terrorist plan.
According to a CTD spokesperson, the arrests made from Rawalpindi, Jhelum and Faisalabad led to the recovery of heavy explosives and weapons. The suspects were reportedly planning to target sensitive installations in different cities. He said two apprehended from. Jhelum and Faisalabad were among the most dangerous ones.
He said the department conducted 366 intelligence-based operations across Punjab to counter potential terrorism threats, during which 338 suspects were interrogated and 36 terrorists were taken into custody along with weapons, explosives and other prohibited materials.
The arrested individuals were identified as including Bacha Khan, Mahfouz, Nawal, Sardar Khan, Zaman, Malik Faiz, Nazir, Moazam, Rab Nawaz, Atta, Muslim and Shah, among others. They were linked to ‘Fitna-ul-Khawarij’ and other banned organisations, and belonged to various districts including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Chakwal, Attock and Jhelum.
The spokesperson said that 6,262 grams of explosives, 34 detonators, 34 feet of safety fuse wire, five improvised explosive devices (IEDs), pamphlets of banned outfits, magazines, prima cards, mobile phones and cash were recovered from their possession.
He said 31 cases had been registered against the arrested suspects and further investigations were underway.
Meanwhile, CTD Punjab, in coordination with local police and other security agencies, conducted 7,799 combing operations across the province, during which 296,521 individuals were checked, 1,261 suspects were detained, 1,090 FIRs were registered and 709 recoveries were made.
The spokesperson said CTD Punjab urged citizens to report any suspicious activity to the CTD helpline 0800-11111.
