LAHORE, Jul 04 (APP): Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabeel Javed, has directed all Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners across the province to remain on high alert in anticipation of monsoon rains, particularly during the sensitive days of Ashura.
In a statement issued on Friday, Nabeel Javed emphasized that all relevant institutions — including PDMA Punjab, WASA, and Rescue services — must be fully prepared to handle any emergency situation. The Relief Commissioner warned that monsoon showers are expected during the Ashura period, and therefore, preemptive measures must be completed without delay.
“Immediate drainage of water from low-lying areas along the routes of mourning processions must be ensured,” he stated, adding that the Chief Minister of Punjab has given clear instructions to finalize all advance preparations in light of possible rain and flood threats.
He further directed that rescue and relief equipment should be made available at vulnerable locations, and that Section 144 must be strictly enforced around rivers, streams, and other water bodies. Bathing in rivers and seasonal streams has been strictly prohibited to avoid any untoward incidents.
As per the Chief Minister’s instructions, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) is working proactively to minimize risk and ensure safety. The Relief Commissioner also stressed the importance of timely dissemination of weather-related alerts and safety precautions to the public through print, electronic, and social media.
Moreover, he instructed district authorities to share monsoon safety guidelines with local media to raise public awareness and ensure community cooperation during the monsoon and Ashura period.
