PFA seals marmalade unit, destroys 36,000kg adulterated products

LAHORE, Dec 13 (APP): The Punjab Food Authority (PFA)  intensified its crackdown on the food fraud mafia in Lahore on Saturday,sealing a substandard marmalade manufacturing unit,registering a case against its owner and destroying thousands of kilograms of unsafe food items.
According to a PFA spokesperson,the operation was conducted under the directives of DG PFA Asim Javed and supervised by the Additional Director and Deputy Director Lahore.
Around 36,000kg of adulterated marmalade,rotten fruits and vegetables and prohibited chemicals were confiscated and destroyed on the spot.
DG Asim Javed said the seized marmalade,prepared from carrot,amla and harar was made from insect-infested, fungus-ridden and decayed fruits.
Hazardous chemicals were reportedly used to mask foul smells and remove insects and fungus, while the substandard marmalade was packaged attractively for distribution across Punjab.
The estimated market value of the destroyed goods was approximately Rs180 million.
“Food terrorists and fraud elements are being dealt with strictly under the law,” the DG said, adding that the PFA is conducting continuous operations to protect public health. He urged citizens to report food safety violations to ensure timely action against offenders.
