MULTAN, Nov 06 (APP): The ground has been broken to embellish city’s 9-kilometre dual road from business-bustling Syedan Wala Chowk to relatively quiet Sahu Chowk, to build Multan Avenue, a Rs. 2.8 billion signature boulevard the city of saint’s business circles, commoners and elites would cherish alike for decades as a gift from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif for Multanites.
The idea was conceived by Commissioner Amir Kareem Khan after noticing business on the three-kilometer strip from Syedan Wala Chowk to Nagana Chowk accelerated at an amazing speed and chose it to give Multanites a boulevard comparable to The Mall Road in Lahore, Shahrah-e-Faisal in Karachi or Constitution Avenue in Islamabad. “Not a single patch of soil would be visible throughout the 9 kilometer stretch and allied facilities”, officials said implying it would be covered by greenery, Concrete tiles and Asphalt layer.
Multan Avenue would have some unique features like Green Parking and the Park Ways, dotted with segments of varied public facilities, running along the 9km stretch wearing upscale tone and boasting cutting edge designing mastery, commissioner Khan declared while addressing a select gathering of notables from different segments of society after performing groundbreaking last Wednesday at Nagana Chowk. People would remember CM Maryam Nawaz’s ‘Punjab Khushhal, Sarken Bahal’ initiative forever, commissioner added.
The mega project would take almost five to six months, however, commissioner wants it completed early for opening on Mar 23, the Pakistan Day next year and so it has been divided into eight segments of just above one kilometer each.
To address the existing inadequate lighting on the central median, 260 new streetlights would illuminate the boulevard. The existing dual carriageway would emerge as a three-lane highway to provide best commuting experience. The usual glimpse of post-rain horrid view would no more be haunting the road users as its modern design necessitates storm water drainage system to manage the flow of rainwater and floodwater, thereby ensuring the durability of the road. The Multan Avenue would have sixteen-feet wide service roads on both sides to ensure local traffic continues smoothly as the traffic on the main arteries operational towards inter-city highways and motorways or to the city.
A 14-feet-wide strip running between the storm water drain and service road on both sides of the dual carriageway will be transformed into Green Parkways with segments of greenery, plants, benches, walking tracks and with facilities for fitness conscious folks like an Open Gym.
It will have 18 parking sections discreetly spread on a total stretch of 5.5 kilometers, to accommodate 830 vehicles. Another 16 parking sections will be developed over a 4.45-kilometer stretch on the other side, accommodating an additional 760 vehicles. Parking bays would spare service road from parking glut. The project is not merely a construction endeavor but a practical model of urban regeneration, giving Multan a new Green Identity, officials said.
