LAHORE, Nov 04 (APP):The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday acquitted three men who had been sentenced to death in connection with the 2014 suicide attack at the Wagah Border.
A two-member bench headed by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi heard the appeals filed by convicts Haseen Ullah, Habibullah, and Said Jan alias Gajni. The court set aside their death sentences after finding the prosecution’s evidence insufficient.
During the hearing, defence counsels Raja Nadeem and Akram Qureshi argued that their clients were implicated in the case nine months after the incident and that the prosecution failed to present any witnesses or credible evidence to prove allegations of facilitating the suicide bombers.
The state prosecutor, however, maintained that 55 civilians were killed and over 110 injured in the terrorist attack and urged the court to uphold the death sentences.
After reviewing the arguments, the bench ruled that the evidence on record did not substantiate the charges, and therefore acquitted all three appellants.
The case had been registered at the Batapur Police Station following the 2014 suicide bombing near the Pakistan-India border at Wagah.
