PESHAWAR, Oct 27 (APP):Acting on instructions from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi, authorities in the provincial capital Peshawar have decided to launch a decisive operation against organized professional beggars and the contractors who employ them.
Teams led by assistant commissioners will be formed and police have been ordered to take action at the police-station level against professional beggars, officials said.
The operation will include demolition of makeshift camps of professional beggars in suburban areas where many are reported to have come from Sindh and Punjab, and arrest of the contractors who exploit them.
Those professional beggars identified as outsiders will be deported from the province.
The government said deserving beggars will be transferred to the Social Welfare Department’s Darul-Kafala centre, where they will be taught various skills to be rehabilitated as productive members of society.
Orphaned and homeless beggar children will be handed over to the welfare organisation Zamung Kor for free education, shelter and meals, the statement added.
For operations in the upscale Hayatabad area, responsibilities have been assigned to the Peshawar Development Authority (PDA).
The decision follows a meeting chaired by Commissioner Peshawar Division Riaz Khan Mehsud, which was attended by the Deputy Commissioner Peshawar, the Deputy Director Social Welfare, police, PDA officials and other concerned departmental officers.
Authorities said the operation will commence immediately and daily situation reports (DSRs) have been requested.
