GCWUS signs MoU to support environmental research and student development

SIALKOT, Nov 18 (APP): Government College Women University Sialkot (GCWUS) on Tuesday signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Sitara Foundation USA to foster environmental research, support student development, and promote community-centered sustainability initiatives for the period 2025–2027.
According to a university press release, Sitara Foundation USA has announced two-year fellowships for ten Master’s students of Environmental Sciences, each receiving a monthly stipend of PKR 10,000. Students submitted their project proposals, and following a detailed scrutiny process and interviews conducted by the Foundation’s representatives, all ten students were selected for full project funding. Immediately after the MoU signing, the Foundation awarded the first monthly stipend to each selected student.
The partnership also includes scholarships and funding for university-led environmental projects. Faculty members will receive technical and academic assistance to design and implement sustainability initiatives such as composting and kitchen gardening, rainwater harvesting systems, and plastic recycling with neighborhood-level waste reduction.
Speaking on the occasion, Irum Sheikh, President of Sitara Foundation USA, reaffirmed her commitment to improving the environment and water quality of Sialkot. She said the organization is investing in education and environmental research because young scholars can provide innovative, research-driven, and sustainable solutions. Reflecting on her time as a GCWUS student, she expressed pride in supporting her alma mater and pledged continued support in the future. She also appreciated the efforts of Dr. Shehla Andleeb and Dr. Khalil for maintaining strong coordination with the Foundation and guiding students in developing meaningful research projects.
GCWUS Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shazia Bashir thanked Irum Sheikh and Sitara Foundation USA for extending valuable support to students and faculty. She praised Irum as an inspiring alumna and encouraged other graduates to contribute to their institution in similar ways. She also motivated students and faculty to work with dedication and excellence to attract further national and international collaborations.
The MoU signing ceremony and fellowship distribution were attended by Prof. Dr. Tariq (Incharge, Faculty of Natural Sciences), Dr. Afzaal Butt (Incharge, Faculty of Languages & Humanities), Malik Gulshaan Aslam (Controller of Examinations), Mr. Ijaz Ahmad (Registrar), Dr. Rashid Hafeez (Chairperson, English Department), Dr. Umer Farrukh (Director Extension & Linkages), Dr. Shagufta Firdous (DSA), and Mr. Usama Ashraf (Incharge ITSC).
