GIlGIT ,Nov 24 (APP): The five year constitutional term of the Gilgit Baltistan government comes to an end on Wednesday, marking the beginning of an accelerated phase in preparations for the caretaker setup and the upcoming general elections in the region.
The summary for the appointment of the caretaker chief minister has already been forwarded to the Prime Minister of Pakistan. The formal announcement of the caretaker chief minister is expected by tomorrow. Following the appointment, the caretaker chief minister will announce the names of the new caretaker cabinet members.
With the completion of the government’s term the cabinet will stand dissolved tonight, while the incumbent Chief Minister Gulbar Khan will relinquish his office. Under the law the caretaker administration will be responsible for ensuring transparent and impartial elections across Gilgit-Baltistan.
Political observers say the outgoing government initiated various projects in the fields of energy, tourism, communication, and education over the past five years. However, severe power shortages, financial constraints, and governance issues remained major challenges throughout the term.
Opposition parties reacting to the completion of the government’s tenure criticized its performance, stating that adequate measures were not taken to address public concerns. They demanded that the caretaker setup be formed in accordance with principles of neutrality and transparency.
The Gilgit Baltistan Election Commission has confirmed that with the government’s term ending, preparations for the next general elections will now enter the final phase. The commission reiterated that elections will be conducted strictly according to the constitutional schedule.
Public attention now remains focused on the announcement of the caretaker chief minister and the formation of the new caretaker cabinet.
