FAISALABAD, Jun 02 (APP):The agriculture experts have advised the farmers to start sesame cultivation immediately and use medium to heavy loam soil for this purpose and unsuitable soil can hamper the production.
A spokesman of Agriculture (Extension) department said here on Monday that sesame is an important cash crop which could not only play a significant role in catering to domestic food requirements but also help the growers mitigate their financial sufferings due to its attractive market value.
He said that best time for sesame cultivation is from June to mid of July. Hence, the farmers should start sesame cultivation immediately and use its high quality seed to get bumper production.
He said that the Agriculture department Punjab has released guidelines to ensure successful sesame cultivation across the province. He advised the growers to select medium to heavy loam soils with good water absorption and moisture retention which are considered most suitable for sesame farming.
He warned against using clayey or non-absorbent soils because stagnant rain or irrigation water in such fields can lead to plant death.
Similarly, excessively sandy, saline-alkaline and low-lying areas are also deemed unsuitable for sesame cultivation due to their poor support for plant growth, he added.
He said that the farmers should select approved sesame varieties for cultivation including TH-6, TS-5, NIAB Pearl, TS-3, NIAB Til 2016, NIAB Millennium, Anmol Til and Black King. These varieties have demonstrated strong production potential under local conditions, he added.
Agri spokesman further said that in the hot climate zones of South Punjab, sesame varieties developed by NIAB Faisalabad can be sown during June and July as these varieties can give maximum yield in these areas.
