RAWALPINDI, Oct 31 (APP):The City Traffic Police (CTP) Rawalpindi on Friday issued a comprehensive traffic diversion plan to keep traffic flowing during the Kachehri Chowk remodelling project, which is scheduled to commence on November 3.
Chief Traffic Officer Rawalpindi Farhan Aslam, addressing a press conference at his office, said that all routes leading to Kachehri Chowk would be closed for construction and diversions would be put in place from Sunday.
The Kachehri Chowk mega project, he said, involved the construction of three flyovers and three underpasses from the Annexi area up to University Chowk.
According to the CTO, more than 450 traffic officers and wardens would perform duties round the clock in three shifts to ensure smooth movement on alternative routes and to facilitate road users.
Explaining the diversions, he said that commuters travelling from Rawat via Jhelum Road towards Old Airport would use Bahria Phase 1 and High Court Road. Those heading from Jhelum Road towards Peshawar Road and New Airport would take Morgah turn, Attock Oil Refinery, Education Board Office, Defence Road, Khawaja Corporation Chowk, Tulsa Road, Tahli Mohri Chowk, Kalma Chowk and Bakra Mandi to reach 22 Number Chowk.
Similarly, traffic from Jhelum Road towards Saddar and Murree Road would be diverted via New Lalazar, Foundation University, COD Chowk, Burki Chowk, Convent Chowk and Family Ward Chowk to 22 Number Chowk, from where all traffic would move towards Khattak Chowk and proceed to the relevant destinations.
During the remodelling period, he said, commuters travelling from Old Airport towards Murree Road and Saddar would use Rawal Road, Fauji Tower, Tipu Road and the route under Rahimabad Flyover to reach Moti Mahal. For those travelling from Peshawar Road towards Murree Road and Old Airport, the diversions via Jinnah Park would remain in place with minor adjustments.
The CTO said that public awareness regarding the traffic arrangements would be ensured through official social media platforms, and by disseminating information through print and electronic media. Travellers could also obtain real-time guidance and traffic updates via FM 88.6.
While acknowledging that motorists might face temporary inconvenience, CTO Farhan Aslam urged road users to plan their journeys with an additional 15 to 20 minutes, exercise patience, and avoid double-lining and wrong parking to maintain traffic flow.
He further requested citizens to cooperate with traffic personnel deployed on the roads, stating that uninterrupted movement on major arteries depended not only on the efforts of duty officers but also on public cooperation.
