7,000 Rawalpindi cops deployed for Muharram security: CPO

RAWALPINDI, Jun 27 (APP): More than 7,000 police personnel have been deployed to provide security to around 1,800 gatherings and over 400 processions during the first 10 days of Muharram-ul-Haram.
City Police Officer Syed Khalid Hamdani, in a statement on Friday, said over 1,000 volunteers (Razakars) would also assist the police in security arrangements.
The volunteers had been imparted special training in that regard at the Police Headquarters, he added.
Moreover, the CPO said, around 930 traffic police personnel would also be in the field to maintain smooth traffic on the city roads and in the surroundings of the Imambargahs and procession routes.
He reaffirmed that the Rawalpindi Police would be on toes for the security of some 413 processions and 1,796 gatherings to be held during Muharram-ul-Haram.
The instructions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Inspector General of Police Dr Usman Anwar for foolproof security arrangements would be strictly complied with, the COP added.
He said a special control room had been established in the Safe City Rawalpindi to monitor the processions and gatherings through Safe City and other cameras.
The CPO said no person would be allowed to enter the procession without a body search, while all the roads and streets adjacent to the procession routes would be sealed.
Parking of vehicles would also not be allowed near Imambargahs, he added.
CPO Hamdani said the standard operating procedures and the code of conduct issued by the Punjab Government regarding Muharram-ul-Haram would be fully implemented.
He warned tenants of legal action in case of their non-registration. He asked the owners of hostels, hotels and inns not to allow anyone to stay in violation of the SOPs.
He further warned that immediate legal action would be taken against the elements spreading religious and sectarian hatred on social media.
The CPO assured that the Rawalpindi Police were taking all measures to establish peace and order, and an atmosphere of brotherhood during Muharram-ul-Haram.
