234 professional beggars arrested during 18-day crackdown

RAWALPINDI, Feb 02 (APP): Acting on the directives of City Police Officer (CPO), Syed Khalid Mehmood Hamdani, Rawalpindi Police have intensified a crackdown against professional beggars, arresting 234 individuals across the city over the past 18 days, police said on Monday.
According to a police spokesperson, those taken into custody were included 113 men, 112 women and nine transgender persons.
Special squads had been constituted to curb organized begging, with strict monitoring being carried out on busy roads and major thoroughfares. The spokesperson said professional beggars often obstruct traffic and cause inconvenience to citizens.
He added that many individuals involved in organized begging were also found to be linked with theft, drug peddling and other criminal activities.
He said the operation was being conducted in line with the vision of the Punjab chief minister and would continue across the city.
