LAHORE, Oct 28 (APP):On the special directives of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Social Welfare Department handed over 1,100 wheelchairs to the Transport Department to facilitate persons with disabilities in public transport across the province.
A ceremony was held in this regard on Tuesday which was attended by Provincial Minister for Social Welfare and Bait-ul-Maal Sohail Shaukat Butt and Provincial Minister for Transport Bilal Akbar Khan as chief guests. Electric wheelchairs, tri-cycles, and motorized tri-cycles were distributed among persons with disabilities belonging to Lahore, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Sahiwal divisions.
Addressing the event, Provincial Minister Sohail Shaukat Butt said that the uplift of vulnerable and marginalized segments of society was among the top priorities of the Punjab government. He said efforts were underway to empower children with disabilities and enable their independence in education and daily life. He added that the Social Welfare Department, under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, was expanding welfare initiatives across Punjab to serve humanity with dignity and compassion.
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan said that the initiatives of the Chief Minister were aimed at improving public convenience and promoting inclusion in the transport sector. He said special buses had been equipped with inclusive facilities along with significantly reduced fares for persons with disabilities.
Referring to a viral incident in Sargodha involving a woman struggling to board a bus, he lauded the Chief Minister’s swift response to provide her a wheelchair, terming it an example of responsive governance. The ceremony concluded with a renewed commitment to enhance accessibility and inclusion across Punjab.
