President stresses upon investing in Braille education for inclusive society

ISLAMABAD, Jan 04 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi while reiterating the commitment to advance the rights of persons with disabilities, has said that investing in Braille education, upgrading its inclusion and broadening access to its materials are pivotal steps towards developing an inclusive and equitable society.

“Uniting for universal accessibility isn’t a privilege but a reflection of our collective resolve. I am confident that by working together, we can create a world where barriers are eliminated and opportunities are made accessible for everyone,” the president said in a message on the occasion of World Braille Day being observed on January 4.

The president said that they were commemorating the “World Braille Day” to highlight the significance of improving access to knowledge for persons with visual disabilities.

He also expressed his admiration for Pakistan’s progressive efforts in enhancing accessibility for persons with visual impairments.

“Today we also pay homage to Louis Braille whose invention transformed the lives of millions of people with visual disabilities with literacy. Braille is more than a tactile script; it symbolizes empowerment, freedom and inclusivity for people with visual impairments,” the President Secretariat Press Wing, in a press release, quoted him as saying.

President Alvi said Pakistan had demonstrated remarkable dedication in advancing Braille literacy and accessibility, which is exemplified by its endorsement of the internationally acclaimed Marrakesh Treaty for visually impaired persons which would help them access millions of books in Braille, audios, and large prints.

The nation had made significant efforts to incorporate Braille within educational institutions and libraries, offering enhanced materials for higher education, he added.

Moreover, the president said Pakistan had initiated advanced training programs benefiting students, educators and parents, to facilitate an inclusive environment in public spaces where persons with visual impairments can smoothly access vital information and education.

“By integrating Braille, Pakistan demonstrates an unwavering dedication to inclusivity, ensuring equitable access to education, literature, training and rehabilitation opportunities across every province, irrespective of visual ability,” he added.

The president opined that these endeavours highlighted the nation’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all its citizens.

Israeli forces bombs hospital in Gaza’s Khan Younis city, as ground battles intensify

UJITED NATIONS, Jan 03 (APP): Continuing airstrikes were reported across Gaza on Wednesday, with “intense ground battles” between Israeli forces and Palestinian fighters in refugee camps in central areas, that have reportedly left many dead.

Airstrikes and missiles struck dwellings and public buildings on Tuesday including Al-Amal hospital in Khan Younis killing five, among them a five-day-old baby, reports said.

“No child in the world should be killed, let alone one sheltering under the emblem of a humanitarian organization; this has to end,” Gemma Connell, a team leader from UN aid coordination office OCHA, said in a video posted on X soon after the attacks.

According to Ms. Connell, the hospital was “clearly marked” with the logo of the Palestinian Red Crescent.

An estimated 14,000 people were sheltering at the health facility when it was shelled twice, attacks that were also swiftly condemned by UN health agency chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

“I deplore today’s strikes on the Al-Amal hospital…which severely damaged the Palestine Red Crescent Society training centre located within the hospital complex,” Tedros wrote on X.

Adding his voice once again to repeated international calls for an immediate ceasefire, Tedros described the hospital bombardment as “unconscionable”.

“Gaza’s health system is already on its knees, with health and aid workers continuously stymied in their efforts to save lives due to the hostilities.”

Many of those sheltering at Al-Amal when it was shelled had now left, the WHO Director-General said, while those remaining were “extremely fearful for their safety and planning to leave a place they had turned to for refuge and protection”.

Under international humanitarian law the hospital “should be a protected space…and today it was hit twice”, said Dr. Ayadil Saparbekov, WHO Team Lead for Health Emergencies, speaking from the facility in a video posted on X, during a UN assessment mission to the hospital that indicated extensive damage.

“The war should stop, the healthcare workers and health facilities should be protected.”

The latest humanitarian update from UN aid coordination office OCHA described “heavy Israeli bombardment from air, land and sea…across most of the Gaza Strip” on Tuesday, along with continued rocket fire into Israel by Palestinian armed forces.

Clashes on the ground were also reported in the southern town of Khan Younis, along with “heavy strikes” in Gaza city to the north.

OCHA also highlighted reports of multiple fatalities in areas where Palestinians had relocated to, “following orders from Israeli forces to move from northern Gaza”.

Citing Gaza’s health authority, the UN humanitarian update said that 207 Palestinians had been killed from January 1 to 2, and another 338 people injured.

Between October 7 and January 2, the war has claimed at least 22,185 Palestinian fatalities in Gaza – about 70 per cent of them are believed to be women and children. Up to 7,000 people are missing, with many presumed to be buried under the rubble.

According to the Israeli military, since the start of the ground operation in Gaza, 171 soldiers have been killed, and 983 soldiers injured.

QUETTA, Jan 3 (APP): Balochistan Caretaker Minister for Information Jan Achakzai on Wednesday said that around 0.6 million illegal illegal immigrants had been repatriated to their home country so far.

The government would be able to meet the target of repatriation of one million illegal immigrants by January 30, he said while addressing a press conference.

Jan Achakzai alleged that the families of some “terrorists” were holding a protest “on the instructions of their foreign masters and few facilitators in Islamabad”.

A commission was already was dealing with the missing persons issue and they should have raised their grievances at that forum instead of resorting to protest, he added.

The people of Balochistan had rejected the call of the Baloch Yakjehti Committee for a shutter down strike, the minister said.

He said those who were involved in attacking state institutions on May 9 last year should not be allowed to take part in the general elections.

“How they demand a level-playing field,” he regretted.

Referring to the killing of six barbers in Waziristan, Jan Achakzai said it was conspiracy to create hatred between the people of two provinces. Such anti-state designs had been foiled by the State with the support of nation in the past and the enemies would not be allowed to succeed in their nefarious plots in future too, he added.

He said the security forces would take the revenge of ‘every drop of blood’ of martyred barbers from their murderers.

To a question, the minister said national player Ahmed Shahzad would arrive in Quetta on January 7, where he would present a road-map for the cricketers of Balochistan to become a part of the national cricket team.

To another query, he said around 200,000 fake national identity cards from Balochistan had been blocked .
