Imam fatally shot outside mosque in US amid rising Islamophobia

NEW YORK, Jan 04 (APP): Amid a recent surge in anti-Muslim bigotry, an Imam was shot dead outside a mosque in the US state of New Jersey, on Wednesday, the authorities said.

The Imam, Hassan Sharif — a 52-year-old African-American — was shot outside the Masjid Muhammad mosque in Newark, the most populous city in New Jersey.

The gunman is stated to be at large, and the motive for the killing was still unknown.

At Wednesday evening prayers, hundreds of mourners gathered for a vigil in honour of Imam Sharif.

Ras J. Baraka, Newark’s mayor, said the authorities would “bring the perpetrator to justice, no matter how long it takes.”

“Imam Hassan Sharif stood with the people of this city, and we will stand with him and his family,” Baraka added.

The city’s Sheriff, Armando Fontoura, said that a $25,000 reward was being offered to anyone with information regarding the shooting.

Imam Hassan Sharif served at the Newark mosque for three or four years and was recently appointed as resident Imam, according to media reports. A former boxer, Imam Sharif worked as an officer for the Transportation Security Administration.

“Imam Hassan was a beacon of leadership and excellence,” the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR), a prominent Washington-based Muslim advocacy group said in a statement.

“We are devastated at the news of his killing. We are praying for the Imam, his family and loved ones, and his congregation, and we ask everyone to do the same,” CAIR said,

“While the perpetrator’s motive remains unknown and irrespective of this specific incident, we advise all mosques to keep their doors open but remain cautious, especially given the recent spike in anti-Muslim bigotry. ”

The attack on the Muslim leader sent shock waves through the community at a time when Islamophobia is on the rise across the country.

Imam Hassan Sharif was shot as he attended fajar prayers, the head of the Council of Imams in New Jersey, Wahy-ud Deen Shareef, said.

Matthew Platkin, New Jersey’s attorney general, said at a news conference on Wednesday afternoon that there was no indication that the shooting was motivated by bias or that it was an act of terrorism, but he acknowledged the heightened sense of anxiety and fear among New Jersey’s Muslim population.

“We also know that Imam Sharif is just the latest casualty in the senseless gun violence epidemic that plagues our state and our country,” he said. “Tragedies like what we’ve experienced today, regardless of their motivation, should not happen.”

Mew Jersey Governor Philip D. Murphy acknowledged in a statement that an “increase of bias incidents and crimes” had many Muslims on edge and said Salahuddin Muhammad, a former New Jersey resident and member of Masjid Muhammad, drove from Philadelphia on Wednesday after he heard what had happened. He surveyed the scene with tears in his eyes.

“This is personal,” he said. “From Allah we come, and to Allah we return. The Imam is now on his way to paradise.”

UN chief slams attack in Iran, calls for perpetrators to be held accountable

0

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 03 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned an attack in Iran which has reportedly killed more than 100 people taking part in Wednesday’s commemoration for a former top military general in the eastern city of Kerman.

According to Iranian officials at the scene, more than 170 people have also been wounded. News reports citing local officials said that there were two explosions as thousands were walking along the route to a cemetery in Kerman which is the final resting place of Qassim Suleimani, who was killed in a US drone strike in the Iraqi capital Baghdad four years ago.

Reports suggest the roadside bombs were detonated by remote control, causing widespread carnage and chaos, in what Iranian authorities are describing as a terrorist attack. Given the scale and size of the blasts, it’s likely that the death toll will rise.

“The Secretary-General expresses his deep condolences to the bereaved families and the people and the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran. He wishes the injured a speedy recovery”, Florencia Soto Nino, UN Associate Spokesperson, told reporters at the regular noon briefing in New York.

The UN chief called for those responsible, to be held accountable for the deadly blasts. So far, there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack. General Suleimani was not only an accomplished military officer but also an influential national figure in Iran.

ISLAMABAD, Jan 3 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi while reiterating the commitment to advance the rights of persons with disabilities, has said that investing in Braille education, upgrading its inclusion and broadening access to its materials are pivotal steps towards developing an inclusive and equitable society.
“Uniting for universal accessibility isn’t a privilege but a reflection of our collective resolve. I am confident that by working together, we can create a world where barriers are eliminated and opportunities are made accessible for everyone,” the president said in a message on the occasion of World Braille Day being observed on January 4.

He also expressed his admiration for Pakistan’s progressive efforts in enhancing accessibility for persons with visual impairments.
“Today we also pay homage to Louis Braille whose invention transformed the lives of millions of people with visual disabilities with literacy. Braille is more than a tactile script; it symbolizes empowerment, freedom and inclusivity for people with visual impairments,” President Secretariat Press Wing, in a press release, quoted him as saying.
President Alvi said Pakistan had demonstrated remarkable dedication in advancing Braille literacy and accessibility, which is exemplified by its endorsement of the internationally acclaimed Marrakesh Treaty for visually impaired persons which would help them access millions of books in Braille, audios, and large prints.
The nation had made significant efforts to incorporate Braille within educational institutions and libraries, offering enhanced materials for higher education, he added.
Moreover, the president said Pakistan had initiated advanced training programs benefiting students, educators and parents, to facilitate an inclusive environment in public spaces where persons with visual impairments can smoothly access vital information and education.
“By integrating Braille, Pakistan demonstrates an unwavering dedication to inclusivity, ensuring equitable access to education, literature, training and rehabilitation opportunities across every province, irrespective of visual ability,” he added.
The president opined that these endeavours highlighted the nation’s commitment to upholding the rights and dignity of all its citizens.
