Call for collective action against increasing human rights abuses by India in IIOJK

ISLAMABAD, Aug 04 (APP): Speakers at a discussion called on the international community to assist the people of Jammu and Kashmir in light of the deteriorating human rights situation following India’s illegal revocation of the region’s autonomy.

The discussion was hosted by the Institute of Regional Studies (IRS) on the escalating human rights crisis in IIOJ&K since August 2019.

Mushaal Malick, former SAPM on Human Rights,Women Empowerment and wife of Hurriyat leader Yasin Malik, emphasized the need to maintain international attention on the Kashmir issue. She praised the Pakistani government’s steadfast support for Kashmiris’ right to self-determination and called for increased backing from the Kashmiri diaspora and the international community to address the deteriorating human rights situation in Jammu and Kashmir.

Ambassador Jauhar Saleem, President IRS, highlighted a significant rise in human rights abuses in IIOJK following the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35 A. He stressed that ‘the solution to end Indian atrocities in Jammu and Kashmir lies in fully supporting the Kashmiri people’s inalienable right to self-determination, a commitment that Pakistan’s government and its people have consistently upheld and will continue to support, he added.
Mr. Ilyas Mehmood Nizami, DG South Asia at MoFA, also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination. He noted that the ‘alarming human rights situation in IIOJK requires a collective response from the international community.
Ms. Shamim Shwal, a human rights defender and executive member of APHC, stated that limiting the Chief Minister’s powers in IIOJK, along with other forms of systematic political engineering, was akin to turning the valley into a settler colony. She warned that the ongoing ignorance and inaction of the international community regarding India’s severe human rights violations since August 2019 would encourage New Delhi to advance its hegemonic agenda in IIOJK, further jeopardizing the lives of Kashmiris, she added.
Dr. Waseem Ishaque, Associate Professor at NUML, compared India’s approach to Kashmir with Israel’s tactics in Gaza, endangering the lives of millions of Kashmiris. He highlighted the necessity of exposing India’s hegemonic ambitions in IIJOK to garner international support for Kashmiri self-determination. Mr. Syed Faiz Naqshbandi, former convener APHC, echoed Dr. Ishaque’s sentiment, stressing the significance of the right of self-determination. He noted that India’s continued dismissal of UN Security Council resolutions was undermining the UN’s efforts to secure the Kashmiri right to self-determination. Dr. Waqas Ali Kausar of NUML remarked that India was systematically alienating and depriving Kashmiris of their fundamental political rights.

The event attracted a large, diverse audience of diplomats, opinion makers, researchers, government officials, students, and journalists.

Traditional Games – A dying legacy of our rich culture

0

By Iftikhar Ahmed

FAISALABAD, Aug 04 (APP): As the urban galore continues to overshadowing rural lifestyle and our rich cultural heritage, indigen games involving men, animals and birds are marginalizing from our culture with younger generation least known to once top sports of our ancestors.

Once an integral part of our culture, traditional games like ‘bulls race’, ‘native wrestling’, ‘kabaddi’, ‘hide and seek’, ’dog and bear fight’, ’equilibrists jugglery,’ and much more, gradually faded away and replaced by modern and online computer games.

The mesmerizing melodious voices of Roosters’ ‘Cock-a-doodle-do’ to partridges’ ‘Kut, Kut, kut’, Quails’ ‘Wet My Lips’, Cuckoos’ ‘Cuck-oo’, or sparrows’ chirping are also no more heard even at village fairs and festivals, if any organized somewhere in the country these days.
The legacy of skill, strength, agility, speed, strategy and endurance manifested in ‘kabaddi, ‘desi kushti,’ ‘malakhra,’ ‘dog racing,’ and ‘cocks fighting,’ once mandatory part of our rural life, is gradually dying with the passage of time.

“Such melodies are hard to find these days though they were once remarkable features of rural life,” said Ahmad Ali Ghabro from Shujabad. “Onslaught of modern gadgets out rightly changed the situation. Now, our younger generation only reads in books about these sports.”

Gone are the days when people used to nurture cocks, quails, roosters, cuckoos for their melodious voice competitions and the winners were awarded prizes. And if any exists somewhere it keeps away from the eyes of media.

“Media is enormously overwhelmed by coverage of cricket, football, hockey and other games for being driven by potent advertising mechanisms and financing by the governments, sports bodies and commercial entities,” said Manzoor Pehelwan, a wrestling veteran retired from PIA.

“Before partition ‘Desi Kushti’ was as popular as cricket is today. There were 100 to 150 ‘Akhadas’ in Multan alone where wrestlers were trained,” said Manzoor, once an active organizer of ‘Desi Kushti’ (traditional wrestling) competitions.

He said his elders told that a ‘Dangal’ (Kushti Competition) was organized in Multan in 1950 to raise money for promotion of cricket and football. “But, what an irony that these modern sports ate up our traditional legacy. Although traditional wrestling remained popular till 1980s yet it declined thereon due to lack of financing and unity among wrestlers.”
Neighing and galloping horses in tent pegging and dancing competitions and racing bulls in open grounds are also diminishing gradually. Even if anywhere someone is associated to these sports or such events are organized, they scarcely find a camera lens or pen work to tell a story to our youth.

Kazim Peerzada, a landlord from Vehari, is the one among few, still engaged in pastime of their ancestors like bull race and horse dance. “We are doing it for last 70-80 years. We nurture and train bulls for race and horses for dance.”

He said, it takes 12 months to train a horse for dancing and much more time for a bull to become a race winning. “But when a horse or bull wins a competition, its victory brings us praise and pride.”

Amidst multiple challenges for survival, some fanciers of these sports in Central and South Punjab are still associated to these games and bear expenses incurred on rearing these animals.

Sajjad Dogar and Tahir Abbas a youngster from Layyah are among those, carrying out this legacy even today by organizing bull race. “It is held every month in our village but with much pomp and show during Baisakhi Mela and people enjoy these sports in large number,” Tahir Abbas.

He however regretted, “these sports are declining due to waning traditional village festivals (Mela) and increasing cost of nurturing and training a horse, bull or even a cock.”
Amidst the saga of this dying splendor, Nawab Furqan, the President of Traditional Sports and Games Community (TS&GC), was upbeat about revival of traditional games in Pakistan after he recently organized a three-day traditional sports event in Orakzai Agency with the support of the government.

“The event attracted large number of people who enjoyed ‘Desi Kushti’, sling shot contests, marbles, tent pegging, Kabaddi, traditional archery, paragliding and horse and camel dance,” he informed.

He mentioned that TS&GC also provide training to individuals and teams and a 3-day national course on traditional games will begin at Khanas Pur from Aug 27 to 29. “TS&GC would also send a national team to participate in World Nomads Games being held in Kazakhastan next month.”

World Nomads Games are held every two years and include traditional games of Pakistan and rest of the world, he said. “People were thinking that traditional games had no future but when TS&GC bore the torch to revive them, the government also recognized our efforts making it a part of policy.”

Meanwhile, District Sports Officer Farooq Latif said, sports department hold regular competitions of Desi Kushti, Volley Ball, Kabaddi. ”To promote other games like ‘Kokla Chapaki’, ‘Bandar-Killa’, Gilli-Danda, etc we are planning to hold these games at Women University (WU) Multan.”

“All we want is to teach our youth of our culture and heritage to infuse positivity and save them from negativity of bad company and objectionable content on social media,” Farooq Latif said.

APHC leader urges world to act against India’s ‘reign of terror’

0

ISLAMABAD, Aug 4 (APP): The All Parties Hurriyat Conference Azad Jammu and Kashmir (APHC-AJK) chapter Information Secretary Imtiaz Wani in a message Sunday lambasted India’s alleged human rights atrocities in Kashmir, declaring that the region’s indomitable spirit of freedom remains utterly unvanquished and with unflinching resolve Wani issued a clarion call to the global community to intervene decisively in the long-festering Kashmir dispute.
He said on the occasion of 5th anniversary “Youm-e-Istehsal”(Day of Exploitation) that will be observed tomorrow (Monday) that the world powers should intervene decisively for the resolution of Kashmir dispute adding that India’s ‘reign of terror’ has left the region reeling under unprecedented human rights abuses, political repression, and unspeakable suffering.
Hurriyat leader have issued a unified call to the Kashmiri people to observe August 5 as ‘Youm-e-Istehsal’ (Day of Exploitation), commemorating the fifth anniversary of India’s controversial decision to revoke Article 370, which had accorded occupied Jammu and Kashmir a degree of autonomy.
This move, perpetrated by India’s Hindutva regime, is widely regarded as a brazen attempt to dismantle the region’s unique identity and subjugate its populace, he added.
By observing ‘Youm-e-Istehsal’, the Hurriyat leaders aim to mobilize the Kashmiri masses against the ongoing onslaught on their rights, cultural heritage, and political aspirations, and to reiterate their unwavering commitment to the struggle for freedom and self-determination, he added.
The indomitable spirit of the Kashmiri people and their unwavering struggle for freedom and self-determination can never be forgotten, he said, adding, despite facing unimaginable hardships, brutal suppression, and relentless attempts to erase their identity, the Kashmiris have remained resolute in their pursuit of justice and human rights.
Their courage and resilience serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding the world that the quest for freedom and dignity can never be extinguished, he added.
As the Kashmiri people continue to navigate the treacherous landscape of occupation and oppression, their struggle remains an integral part of the global narrative, demanding attention, solidarity, and support from the international community, he highlighted.
The Modi-led Indian government has transformed the Kashmir Valley into a virtual prison, imposing a suffocating grip on the region and rendering the lives of Kashmiris miserable, he mentioned.
The revocation of Article 370 and the subsequent enforcement of draconian laws have led to a pervasive atmosphere of fear, repression, and despair, he added.
The valley has been subjected to intermittent communication blackouts, stringent curfews, and a heavy military presence, severely restricting the movement and freedoms of its inhabitants, he said.
The economic backbone of Kashmir has been crippled, with widespread job losses, business closures, and a crippling blow to the region’s vital tourism industry, Wani said.
The mental health of Kashmiris has also borne the brunt, with soaring levels of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), he said, adding, the Indian government’s actions have effectively turned the Kashmir Valley into a massive open-air prison, where the fundamental rights and dignity of its people are being systematically eroded.
