Flash Flooding in Chenab & Ravi adjoining Nullahs; heavy rains may trigger Urban Flooding: NDMA

ISLAMABAD, Aug 8 (APP): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA)’s National Emergencies Operation Center anticipated that extremely heavy rainfall over upper catchments of Rivers Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej may cause an increase in water flows in these rivers.

Consequently, medium to High Level Flood flows is expected in River Chenab along with Nullahs of Rivers Chenab and Ravi from August 10-13. Moreover, flows in River Sutlej are subject to releases from Indian Side likely to trigger flash flooding and land sliding in hilly and mountainous regions of Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) in next 24 to 48 hours, an NDMA news release said.

“Heavy rains may cause urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Faisalabad, and other urban areas. Rain-wind / thundershowers with isolated very heavy falls expected in Kalat, Zhob, Sibbi, Naseerabad, Khuzdar, Awaran and Barkhan. In KP, rain-wind / thundershowers with isolated very heavy falls expected in Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Shangla, Battagram, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Galiyat, Haripur, Buner, Swabi, Nowshera, Mardan, Malakand, Mohmand, Khyber, Bajaur, Charsadda, Peshawar, Kohat and Orakzai,” it said.

Parts of Punjab are likely to experience Rain-wind /thundershowers with isolated very heavy falls expected in Murree, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Okara, Kasur, Khushab, Faisalabad, Sargodha, Mianwali, Bhakkar and D.G. Khan. Furthermore,Higher Temperatures & Rains may trigger GLOF Incidents in vulnerable valleys of KP and GB

NDMA has launched the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert application, available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store, to provide timely alerts, advisories, and guidelines to the public. Additional guidance is available on NDMA Website and “Pak NDMA Alert” app available on Google Play Store and iOS App Store. Population at risk is advised to take stay cautious and follow instructions from local authorities.

LAHORE, Aug 08 (APP):Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari on Thursday alleged that mastermind of May 9 was begging for conditional apology.
In a statement issued here, she said that the world media reported how people of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf had attacked army installations. She said that video evidences were available regarding attack on army installations and office of sensitive institution.
She said that a person who was saying that he would not give NRO to anyone, today he was asking for mercy appeal.
How people of Pakistan could accept conditional apology for burning monuments of Pak Army martyrs, she questioned.

Vaccination of nomadic children underway in Bahawalpur

BAHAWALPUR, Aug 08 (APP):District Health Officer for Preventive Services Dr. Khalid Channar said on Thursday said that vaccination was underway to protect children of nomadic families from measles, polio, and other diseases.
He said that vaccinations were being conducted under the health department’s crash programme at locations where nomadic families reside.
He emphasized that significant attention was being devoted to eradicating measles, polio, and other diseases. Regular monitoring of all activities was being carried out, he added.
Dr. Khalid Channar also reported that the health department has registered more than 6,500 children from nomadic communities, and vaccination while other health services were also being provided to these children.

Dept of Human Rights, BARGAD organize ceremony to commemorate Minorities Day

LAHORE, Aug 08 (APP):Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora and Minister for Education Rana Sikandar Hayat participated in a special ceremony organized by the Department of Human Rights in collaboration with the welfare organization “BARGAD” to commemorate Minorities Day.
The event was held at the e-Library near Gaddafi Stadium here on Thursday, where a large number of youth from 12 Union Councils of Lahore, representing the Sikh, Hindu, Christian, and Muslim communities, were present. The event also saw the participation of Allama Asghar Chishti, Director of Human Rights Muhammad Yousuf, Meteorologist Maheen Azam Khan, Romah Shamshad from Kinnaird College, and officials from the Punjab government’s established “Misaq Center.”
In her address, BARGAD’s Executive Director Sabiha Shaheen outlined the objectives of the ceremony, stating that every year, Minorities Day is celebrated on August 11 to ensure the eradication of the sense of deprivation among minorities.
Speaking at the ceremony, Provincial Minister for Minority Affairs Ramesh Singh Arora emphasized that on August 11, 1947, Quaid-e-Azam had clearly stated that everyone in Pakistan would be free to visit their places of worship, and today the Punjab government is taking historic steps to turn that dream into reality, striving to make Pakistan truly inclusive for all. He further expressed that four generations of his family are buried in this soil, and he too wishes to be buried here. He highlighted that a historic budget has been allocated for religious minorities in the recent budget to eliminate the sense of deprivation.
The Minister also pointed out that around 18,000 seats related to minorities are currently vacant. The Punjab government is keen to bring minorities forward in every field, and a letter is being sent to the Finance Department in this regard. There has been nearly a 200% increase in funds for youth belonging to minorities, with the Minorities Development Fund being particularly noteworthy.
This fund aims to accelerate development work in areas where Christian or Hindu communities reside. Minister for Education Rana Sikandar Hayat, in his speech, stated that the scholarship grants for minorities have been increased to ensure that students do not face difficulties in obtaining education. Every religion advocates for humanity, and the Punjab government is practically implementing this philosophy.
The event also featured a panel discussion where the youth asked various questions, and the Ministers provided answers. In a special segment of the ceremony, 78-year-old Hidayat Masih Mali was awarded a shield and a cash prize for planting approximately 1.8 million trees over the past 60 years. At the conclusion of the ceremony, the Provincial Ministers were presented with commemorative shields, and officials associated with BARGAD were awarded certificates of appreciation.
