Gaza hospitals patients beg for food & water as they lie ‘waiting to die,’ WHO official

0

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 18 (APP): The UN World Health Organization (WHO) is continuing to do all it can to deliver critical medicines, supplies and fuel to Gaza hospitals, where the health system is collapsing, an agency official has said.

Fresh from a more than five-week visit to the war-torn enclave, Sean Casey, WHO Health Emergency Officer, said convoys have faced access and security constraints, as well as movement limitations.

“The last week that I was in Gaza, we tried every single day for seven days to deliver fuel and supplies to the north, to Gaza City. And every day those requests for coordinated movement were denied,” he told reporters in New York.

Only around 16 out of 36 hospitals in Gaza are “minimally or partially functioning” after more than three months of conflict.

Hospitals are crammed with thousands of patients and people escaping fighting which has displaced nearly 85 per cent of the population, 1.9 million people. Many of Gaza’s 25,000 health professionals are among those uprooted, making it difficult for them to get to work.

“I saw patients in hospitals every day with severe burns, with open fractures, waiting hours or days for care, and they would often ask me for food or water. It demonstrates the level of desperation that we see,” Casey said.

Though stressing the need for greater access of both medical staff and supplies, “overall, the most critical need is really a ceasefire because everything short of that is simply addressing needs on a day-by-day basis,” he said.

Casey visited six hospitals including Al-Shifa in Gaza City, located in the north.

Gaza’s largest hospital, with more than 700 beds, “is now an emergency room that’s full of severely injured patients and five or six doctors and nurses”. Tens of thousands of displaced persons are living in operating theatres, corridors, and on the stairs.

At Al-Ahli Hospital, also in the north, he saw patients “lying on church pews, basically waiting to die, in a hospital that had no fuel, no power, no water; very, very little in the way of medical supplies and only a handful of staff remaining to take care of them.”

Further south, only 30 per cent of staff remained at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis last week, overwhelmed by patient numbers. The burn unit was staffed by one doctor caring for 100 patients.

Casey said WHO is also working to mobilize additional surgeons, doctors and nurses in Gaza and to establish field hospitals.

The aim is to “backfill” some of the displaced health workers and to meet the significantly increased burden of care, whether due to injuries or “atrocious” living conditions that have increased the risk of infectious disease.

The head of the UN agency that assists Palestinians, UNRWA, on Wednesday, repeated his call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza following his fourth trip to the enclave since the start of the conflict on 7 October.

“This has gone on for far too long. There are no winners in these wars. There is endless chaos and growing despair,” Philippe Lazzarini said in a statement.

He highlighted the situation around Rafah, in southern Gaza, the crossing point for aid delivery into the enclave, where the population has almost quadrupled to more than 1.2 million.

“Makeshift structures of plastic sheeting have mushroomed everywhere including on the streets,” he said, as people tried to protect themselves from the rain. Some of these shelters are housing over 20 people.

“Everyone I met had a personal story of fear, death, loss, and trauma to share. Over the 100 days, the people of Gaza have moved from the sheer shock of losing everything, in some cases every member of their family, to a debilitating struggle to stay alive and protect their loved ones,” he said.

Lazzarini visited a UNRWA school in Deir al-Balah that is now a shelter, where “the overcrowding was claustrophobic, and the filthiness was striking.” Women told him of how they went without food and water to avoid having to use the unsanitary toilet

He also drew attention to the situation caused by the scarcity of commercial goods allowed into Gaza. As a result, the price of basic commodities has increased up to 10 times. Chronically ill people do not have sufficient medicine, for example, to treat diabetes or high blood pressure.

“People are not able to wash and stay clean. Long and repeated blackouts in telecommunications, including internet and mobile phones add to the distress as people feel cut off from the rest of the world,” he said, adding “The siege is the silent killer of many.”

Meanwhile, there is very little information about northern Gaza as access to the area remains highly restricted. Lazzarini said he was not allowed to visit the area, and UNRWA convoys and aid trucks are often delayed for hours at the checkpoint.

“Many desperate people now approach our trucks to get food directly off them, without waiting for distribution. By the time the Israeli authorities give our convoys the greenlight to cross, trucks are almost empty,” he said.

Lazzarini noted that UNRWA staff have also been impacted by the conflict yet still work tirelessly. However, he said he cannot reassure them that they, their families or UN facilities will be safe.

“I call once again for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that can bring some respite and enable a much-needed and significant increase in the flow of basic supplies, including through the commercial route,” he said. “Anything short of this will prolong the misery of an entire population”.

ISLAMABAD, Jan 18 (APP): Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority on Thursday advised national electronic media to abide by the code of conduct issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan.

The directives issued by the PEMRA stated that all its licensees were obliged to abide by the code of conduct issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan in the run of the elections being held on February 8.

The code of conduct applying to print, electronic, digital media, and social media influencers was released by ECP on October 14 last year for the national media and outlined various guidelines required to adhere to during the campaign and polling.

The ECP specified that the media should refrain from expressing biased opinions that undermine Pakistan’s ideals, sovereignty, security, independence, and the integrity of the judiciary and other national institutions.

Furthermore, any statements or accusations that pose a threat to national unity and the law-and-order situation will be strictly prohibited from being broadcast.

The code prohibits the inclusion of material that engages in attacks against candidates or political parties based on gender, religion, or community.

Any violation of the code will be treated seriously, and allegations made by one candidate against another will require confirmation from both sides before prosecution can commence.

In order to ensure compliance with the code, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA), Pakistan Telecom Authority (PTA), Pakistan Information Department (PID), and the Cyber Digital Wing of the Ministry of Information will actively monitor the coverage given to political parties and candidates.

To support the electoral watchdog in implementing the code, PEMRA, PTA, PID, and the Cyber Digital Wing of the Ministry of Information will provide assistance.

To ensure the smooth functioning of the election process, the media campaign will conclude 48 hours before election day and the electoral process will not be interrupted. Besides, surveying in polling stations or constituencies that may adversely impact voters will be avoided.

Only accredited media representatives will be allowed to enter the polling stations, accompanied by a camera to document the polling process. However, the secret ballots will not be videotaped, and media representatives will observe the count without cameras.

The code also emphasises that media representatives must not engage in activities that obstruct the election process before, during, or after the voting.

The broadcast of election results will be prohibited until one hour after the end of polling, it will be stated explicitly that the
results are unofficial and incomplete, and they will only be considered final when officially declared by the Returning Officer.

It is important to note that a journalist or media organisation may have their accreditation terminated if they violate the code of conduct.

BEIJING, Jan. 18 (APP):: A Pakistani dealer showcased distinctive Pakistani handicrafts at “2024 Nepal, India, and South Asia Commodity Expo” kicked off in Lhasa, China, on January 15, promising a nine-day extravaganza of cultural and economic exchange.

It is estimated that his stall will generate a sales volume of five or six hundred thousand Chinese yuan these days, China Economic Net (CEN) reported.

He has been doing business in China for several years. “I spend most of my time in Beijing,” he told the reporter, mentioning that the Chinese market is a vast and quality one and he loves the friendly nature of its people.

Khalil deems to help Pakistan win ICC U19 World Cup

ISLAMABAD, Jan 18 (APP): Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Karak district bowling all-rounder Khubaib Khalil aims to help Pakistan win the ICC Men’s U19 World Cup 2024 in South Africa.

Khubaib made his One-Day debut for Pakistan U19 in the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2023-24 and bagged two wickets against Afghanistan U19 in a promising spell.

Khubaib’s father was not in favour of enrolling him in a proper cricket facility due to financial constraints. His first coach, Matiullah, earmarked him as a future star and helped him get admission to the Islamia Cricket Academy in Kohat, some 70 kilometers from his hometown.

At the academy, young Khubaib was allowed to use the equipment and train every other day, resulting in his selection for FATA Region U13 in the PCB U13 Inter-Regional T20 Tournament 2017 and the subsequent edition in 2018.

He shed light on his struggles in the early days in a chat with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Digital, “I have played cricket in very tough circumstances. I had to work odd jobs to make ends meet, even working as a labourer. My father was struggling with financial issues. I got some money from PCB after playing in the National U19 competitions which helped me sort out a lot of issues. That was the first time I bought my kit bag whereas before that I was using Matiullah’s equipment.”

Khubaib picked up pace bowling after being inspired by South Africa great Dale Steyn. Possessing a smooth action with a steady approach to the crease, he has showcased his ability to hit probing lengths regularly and frustrate batters with his line and length.

Khubaib has shown promise with the bat too, demonstrating good defence and power-hitting skills. His reliability as a lower-order batter was evident in the net sessions where coaches put their trust in his batting ability.

“I’m glad to have represented Pakistan at the recent U19 Asia Cup which was a great exposure for me,” Khubaib said. “I’ve done well in the domestic U19 competitions with both bat and ball which gives me confidence to do well in the World Cup. We have a very good squad that has been mentored by some of the best coaches including Mohammad Yousuf and I’m sure we’ll put a great show in the World Cup.”
