Fazl wants to derail system to get political leverage: Fawad

ISLAMABAD, Dec 6 (APP):Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain Monday lashed out at Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Chief Mualana Fazlur Rehman for giving call to hold [anti-inflation] march in Islamabad on the Pakistan Day.

“March 23 is the most important day for the people of Pakistan. The day is meant for uniting the nation, not to divide [them],” the minister said while talking to the media after the multi-party opposition alliance–PDM announced an anti-inflation march on the Pakistan Day.

Fawad believed that the PDM’s date and policy for the march was not final. Maulana had a track record of changing his policies in the past, he added.

The opposition had every right to launch the march and hold discussion on inflation, but there had been some reservations over behavior of Maulana Fazlur Rehman who wanted to derail the system so that he could get some political leverage, he said, expressing hope that the date would be changed.

He said people like Nawaz Sharif and her daughter Maryam Nawaz were supporting Maulana as all of them were not part of the system. Those who were part of the system did not support and preach such policies, he maintained.

He said in today’s meeting of the PDM, those who were part of the Parliament expressed different point of view from those who were not part of the system.

The minister said Maulana Fazl was taking solo flight as nobody supported his march and policies. “Have some courage Maulana Fazlur Rehman and look to your right and left, there is no one with you as you are alone [in this altogether],” he added.

He expressed the hope that the parties in the alliance (PDM) would have questioned ‘irresponsible’ statement of JUI Amir on the Sialkot incident who had tried to justify this tragedy with an irresponsible statement.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 06 (APP):Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed Monday called the PDM’s decision to call a march on Pakistan Day an “extremely irresponsible and immoral” move.

“Pakistan’s armed forces stage a national parade on March 23 which is attended by citizens, ambassadors and various delegates,” he said in a series of tweets.

The minister said that Islamabad was on high alert for the parade, adding that some roads were closed two or three days in advance in order to prepare.

He said that announcing a march at such a time was not a sign of goodwill towards the country. He also advised the PDM to move the demonstration to April.

Covid disrupted fight against malaria, but no ‘doomsday”: WHO

UNITED NATIONS, Dec 06 (APP):Disruptions due to the coronavirus pandemic resulted in considerable increases in malaria cases and deaths between 2019 and 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO), a Geneva-based UN agency, said Monday.

However, “the doomsday scenario” projected by the WHO has not materialized,” Dr Pedro Alonso, Director, WHO Global Malaria Programme said at the launch of the UN agency’s annual World Malaria Report in Geneva.

According to the analysis, moderate disruptions in the delivery of malaria services contributed to 14 million malaria cases and 69,000 deaths. Two thirds (or 47,000) of the additional malaria deaths, were due to disruptions in the provision of malaria prevention, diagnosis and treatment during the pandemic.Early in the pandemic, WHO had projected a doubling of malaria deaths in

sub-Saharan Africa, as a worst-case scenario. Yet, the analysis found there was an estimated 12 per cent increase in deaths in the region between 2019 and 2020.
“The first message is a good news message. Thanks to urgent and strenuous efforts we can claim that the world has succeeded in averting the worst-case scenario of malaria deaths,” Dr Alonso said.

The report found that just 58 per cent of countries completed their planned campaigns to distribute insecticide-treated mosquito nets (ITNs) in 2020, with most experiencing important delays.

Globally, 72 per cent of all ITNs planned for distribution had been distributed by the end of 2020.

In 2020 of the 65 countries who responded, 37 countries reported partial disruptions (5 per cent to 50 per cent) to malaria diagnosis and treatment services.
By 2021 15 countries reported partial disruptions (5 per cent- 50per cent)
and 6 countries reported severe disruptions.

This year’s World malaria report used new methodology to estimate malaria deaths worldwide. This resulted in a larger share (7.8 per cent) of deaths among under-five children than previously recognized (4.8 per cent).

“We have a better estimate of the real malaria burden and this is now at 627 thousand deaths in 2020” Dr Alonso said.

The report found that there was a 27 per cent reduction in case incidence (cases per 1000 population) of malaria from 2000 to 2020 with an overall downward trend in the malaria death rate from 2000 to the present day.

This amounted to a 49 per cent reduction in the malaria mortality rate from 2000 to 2020. The report noted that the WHO African Region carried about 95 per cent of global malaria cases in 2020, and 96 per cent of global malaria deaths in 2020.

The report revealed that globally, 1.7 billion cases and 10.6 million deaths were averted between 2000 and 2020. Most of the malaria cases (82 per cent) and deaths (95 per cent) averted over the last 20 years were in the WHO African Region.

However, even before the emergence of COVID-19, global gains against malaria were leveling off.” “We are not on a trajectory to success, we are increasingly moving away from reaching the 2020 milestones of WHO’s global malaria strategy,” Dr Alonso said.

A new, country-driven approach to malaria control in high-burden countries was beginning to gain momentum when COVID-19 struck.

According to the analysis in 2020, global malaria case incidence was off track by 40 per cent and the global mortality rate for 2020 was off track by 42 per cent.
On a global scale, progress against malaria remains uneven. The report found that many countries with a low burden of the disease are moving steadily towards the goal of malaria elimination.

Two countries – El Salvador and China – were certified malaria-free by WHO in 2021.

However, most countries with a high burden of the disease have suffered setbacks and are losing ground.Global progress against malaria over the past two decades was achieved, in large part, through the massive scale-up and use of WHO-recommended malaria tools that prevent, detect and treat the disease.

The most recent data also demonstrate that significant and sometimes widening gaps The report warns that the situation remains precarious, especially in sub-Saharan Africa. A convergence of threats in the region poses an added challenge to disease control efforts.

These include Ebola outbreaks in DRC and Guinea, armed conflicts and flooding. At the same time, the document reiterates that the pandemic is not over, and the pace of economic recovery is uncertain. Without immediate and accelerated action, key 2030 targets of the WHO Global technical strategy for malaria will be missed, and additional ground may be lost.

The strategy’s goals include a 90 per cent reduction in global malaria incidence and mortality rates by 2030. The report reiterated that this will require new approaches and intensified efforts aided by new tools and better implementation of existing ones.

This includes a stronger emphasis on equitable and resilient health systems and data-driven strategies.

The report also recommended the expanded use of the RTS,S malaria vaccine recommended by WHO in October. “the vaccine is feasible to deliver, is safe, has a public health impact and is cost-effective,” Dr Alonso said.

“As we speak GAVI is discussing opening up a window for investment in this malaria vaccine,” he added.

The analysis also emphasized that stepped-up investment is also essential. “Funding has flatlined” Dr. Alonso warned “We are about 50 per cent off what we believed the target should be for 2020”.

The report found that a total of $3.3 billion was invested globally in malaria control and elimination in 2020. This was against a target of $6.8 billion to reach global malaria targets.

Annual investments will need to more than triple by 2030 – to $10.3 billion per year, the report noted.

PDM wants to harm national solidarity by giving call of march on Pakistan Day: Farrukh

ISLAMABAD, Dec 6 (APP):Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting Farrukh Habib on Monday called out the multi-party opposition alliance-Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) for giving a call of an anti-inflation march in Islamabad on the Pakistan Day (March 23).

“March 23 has historical significance and is celebrated by the whole nation as Pakistan Day. Those who have announced protest march on this day, actually want to harm national solidarity,” the minister said in a series of tweets.

Describing the PDM as ‘mixture of numerous characters’, he said the alliance had no public agenda and only wanted to save their ill-gotten money. Those who had been rendered unemployed after the last general elections were suffering from anxiety, he added.

The minister said those who had called for politics of ‘now and never’ were now being humiliated as they were not getting any response from the masses.

He said the mood of PDM Chief Maulan Fazlur Rehman in a news conference which he held after the meeting showed that the dream of en mass resignation has been shattered.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 06 (APP):Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has obtained permission from Saudi authorities to operate increased number of flights to the Kingdom, following which the national flag carrier would be operating 48 flights weekly between different destinations of the two countries.

In the light of directives of PIA’s Chief Executive Officer Air Marshal Arshad Malik, he said, the number of flights had been increased from 33 to 48.

Elaborating, the spokesman said eight flights each would be operated to Dammam and Madina, nine to Riyadh and 23 to Jeddah, aimed at taking maximum overseas Pakistanis back to their work places after ease of coronavirus related restrictions.

BEIJING, Dec 6 (APP):Himalayan salt rock from Pakistan is becoming known to a growing number of Chinese consumers as edible salt. In recent years, salt rock products such as Pakistan salt lamp, bath salt, and salt rock plate used for steam sauna have also become popular in China.

“Through the e-commerce platform, the sales of our related products are very considerable. Especially during the recent online shopping carnivals including November 11 and December 12, Himalayan salt rock products from Pakistan are being accepted by more and more Chinese people through e-commerce platforms,” Manager of Ciaodo, the biggest Taobao shop for Pakistani rock salt said on Monday.

November 11th, a day that e-commerce companies have turned into the world’s biggest for online shopping by offering a stream of promotions and discounts.

Taking this opportunity, Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms, Taobao and Tmall, have enabled the sales of rock salt products in Pakistan to perform well. Ciaodo has sold over 300 Himalayan salt lamp products on that occasion, China Economic Net (CEN) reported.

They said that indeed, e-commerce platforms have boosted sales and, more importantly, through these channels, the huge Chinese market is embracing Himalayan salt lamps gradually and laying a solid foundation for more Pakistani products being exported to China.

The combination of online and offline forms has improved the sales channels of Himalayan salt lamps in China. Ciaodo believes that China International Import Expo (CIIE) has significantly raised the popularity of salt lamps in China.

The manager said that CIIE was very effective in promoting Himalayan salt lamps. After the closing of the 4th CIIE this year, many Chinese consumers who learned about Pakistan salt lamps found our Taobao shop and bought our products.

Because salt lamps are heavy, more consumers are more willing to buy them on e-commerce platforms after learning about them through offline channels.
Chinese consumers’ love for salt lamps is obvious.

“There is no bad feedback for our salt lamps and we have a lot of repeat customers. Chinese consumers value it for its decorative, practical and, most importantly, health benefits. Most of the Chinese customers who bought Himalayan salt lamps will come back and buy some more to give to others or put in more places,” Ciaodo said.

Salt Lamp still faces some challenges in exporting to China, and e-commerce platforms are addressing these issues.

Ciaodo said, “We started selling Himalayan edible salt in 2017 and started selling salt lamps in the last two years. The biggest difficulty of this product is that its popularity is still deficient and the target consumer group is limited. But the situation is improving thanks to CIIE and e-commerce platforms. In addition, the salt lamp is still a crude processed product.

“We are also trying to design new salt rock products to maximize the good e-commerce sales environment in China and make more people like the salt lamp from Pakistan.”

In addition to edible salt and salt lamps, bath salt and salt plates for sauna are also gradually becoming popular in the Chinese market.

Ciaodo said that many Pakistani rock salt sellers in China are looking forward to the performance of this kind of rock salt products in the Chinese market in the future, which will become another huge business opportunity.

Pakistan calls on Indian govt to reconstruct Babri Masjid

Pakistan calls on Indian govt to reconstruct Babri Masjid

Pakistan on Monday called upon the government of India to take immediate steps to halt the illegal construction of a temple at the place of Babri Masjid, reconstruct the Babri Masjid at its original site and ensure the safety and protection of mosques and Islamic holy sites in India.

The Foreign Office in a statement said today marked another year since the tragic demolition of the historic Babri Masjid by BJP-RSS zealots.

This day was a stark reminder of the hysteria and hatred exhibited in India against Muslims and their heritage 29 years ago with state complicity.

The cruelty and frenzy with which the centuries-old Mosque in Ayodhya was desecrated and demolished belied all tenets of international norms and constituted grave violation of religious rights of the minorities.

The heart-wrenching scenes of the razing of the Babri Mosque were still fresh not only in the minds of Muslims across the globe but also in the collective conscience of the international community.

The defective Indian Supreme Court judgment of November 2019 and the subsequent shameless acquittal of criminals, mainly BJP leaders who had presided over the demolition in public glare, was testimony to India’s fast descent into majoritarianism and Hindutva extremism.

Appointing former Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, who led the bench writing the flawed verdict, as nominated member of Parliament within four months of his retirement, clearly indicated that the process was influenced by the ruling BJP-RSS dispensation for the advancement of its Hindutva agenda.

Unfortunately, this remained the reality of today’s India where sacrilege of religious places and senseless attacks against minorities with state complicity had become a norm.

The religious zealotry that was witnessed 29 years ago had only aggravated in ferocity and viciousness. Anti-Muslim pogroms in Gujarat in 2002 and in Delhi in February 2020, the discriminatory Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) aimed at disenfranchising Muslims, violence against Muslims on the false pretexts of cow vigilantism, so-called ‘Love-Jihad’ and many such flimsy excuses, the recent brutal eviction of Muslims in Assam, the vandalization of mosques and Muslim properties in Tripura, the continued disruption of Friday prayers in Gurgaon were vivid pointers to growing religious intolerance and fanaticism in India.

The harrowing impunity with which minorities especially Muslims were being persecuted, demonized and marginalized in India was deplorable.

India’s attention was also invited to the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)’s numerous resolutions, condemning the despicable act of demolishing the historic Mosque, and OIC’s 47th Session of Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) calling on the Indian Government to implement its commitment to reconstruct the Babri mosque on its original site and to punish those responsible for its demolition. Furthermore, meaningful steps must be taken to ensure safety, security and religious freedom for all minorities especially Muslims in India.

The international community, United Nations and relevant international organizations must also vociferously impress upon India to abide by its obligations under international law to protect Muslim places of worship from Hindutva extremism and ensure effective safety of all minorities and their holy sites, the statement concluded.

IFC to partner with Engro in reducing plastic waste

IFC to partner with Engro in reducing plastic waste

ISLAMABAD, Dec 6 (APP):To step up the fight against climate change in Pakistan, International Finance Corporation (IFC) is partnering with Engro Corporation to help reduce plastic waste promote recycling, and boost the company’s energy efficiency.

The project is part of IFC’s Pakistan Resource Efficiency Program, which aims to improve efficiency, cost-competitiveness, reliability, and productivity in the manufacturing sector, particularly in energy-intensive industries.

IFC’s climate advisory project will help Engro Corporation assess the opportunities for moving toward a circular plastics economy as it develops a $1.8 billion petrochemical project to produce polypropylene.

The circular system would see polypropylene products collected and reused or recycled and converted into viable products. IFC’s team will also assist Engro Corporation in driving sustainability by reducing its carbon and water footprints and adapting to climate-related risks through targeted interventions.

Pakistan is the second-largest domestic market for plastics in South Asia after India, and among the top 10 countries most impacted by climate change. The country produces about 30 million tons of solid waste annually, of which 9 percent is plastic waste. Its Indus river is a major carrier of plastic waste into oceans.

President and CEO of Engro Corporation Ghias Khan, said: “At Engro, we believe that operating businesses sustainably at a globally competitive level need not be a zero-sum game.

Therefore, we are actively partnering with global leaders such as IFC for a circular plastics economy, resource efficiency and carbon footprint reduction, to build a more sustainable future for our coming generations.”

“Climate change is already impacting Pakistan and it’s crucial for companies to do everything they can to be efficient in their resource usage,” said Hela Cheikhrouhou, IFC’s regional Vice President for the Middle East, Central Asia, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Pakistan “Reusing plastics will not only cut greenhouse gas emissions and protect the environment, but will help companies save money and become more competitive internationally.”

Engro Corporation has been a strategic IFC client for nearly three decades. IFC has supported Engro’s growth from an ammonia-based fertilizer producer to a conglomerate with interests mainly in polyvinyl chloride production, dairy, power generation, liquified petroleum gas storage and handling, liquefied natural gas regasification, telecom towers and logistics.
